ON THE AGENDA: Prop 218 Proposed Rates Increase
It's Prop 218 season again and that means City Councils everywhere are considering proposed rate increases for 2023 solid and organic waste collection from Recology San Mateo. For Belmont rate payers, the anticipated rate increase is well under 4 percent, which is less than last year’s change and about half of current inflation rates.
Did you know? A public hearing for the proposed rates will be held on Nov. 22, 2022; rate notices will be mailed, but you don't have to wait. You can always comment at this week's City Council meeting, the item is on the agenda.

You're All Energy Consumption Superstars Well Done, Belmont
Thank you to all Belmont residents and businesses who reduced their energy consumption this week. Our forecasters tell us that the worst of the summer 2022 heat wave is now behind us, but we hope you'll keep the good habits all year long.
Here's some quick tips to encourage others to be as energy-consumption conscious as you are. Prepare for potential outages and reduce energy consumption during the Flex Alerts with these steps:
- If you must use major appliances, do so before 3 p.m.
- Close your window coverings to keep indoors cooler.
- If you have air conditioning, “pre-cool” your home prior to 3 p.m., then increase the thermostat to least 78 degrees or shut off the air conditioning altogether.
- Charge your devices before 3 p.m.

Sunday is the Anniversary of 9/11 Belmont Joins the Nation to Remember
We join in the shared grief as we collectively recognize Sunday, Sept. 11 as the somber anniversary of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, known today just as 9//11.
On Sunday, we remember the heroism, courage, selflessness, and dedication of the first responders and the thousands who lost their lives on 9/11. We also reflect on all the spouses, children, parents, siblings and friends who have had to live with the pain of their loss since that horrible day 21 years ago.
These loved ones are missed, but never forgotten.
San Mateo Consolidated Fire Department will be honoring those lost on Sept. 11, 2001 at each of its fire stations starting at 6:50 a.m. on Sept. 11, 2022 with a short ceremony of remembrance as the flag is lowered and reset to half-staff.
The fire department will do a larger, more formal ceremony at Station 21, 120 S Ellsworth Ave, San Mateo, at 8:50 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 11, 2022.

THANK YOU COMMUNITY You Helped Us Reach 100% Compliance
Gold stars to our local businesses and apartment residents for working with the City and our waste collection contractor, Recology San Mateo County, to meet the goal of being 100 percent compliant with Assembly Bill 1826.
What's AB1826? Belmont residents are super smart and we all know it's the commercial composting law that went into effect in 2016 requiring businesses and multi-family residential buildings to separate their food waste and landscape cuttings from their regular garbage.
Thanks to YOU we're unburdening our landfill of waste that can be composted instead.
Keep up the great work Belmont. Next up is getting 100 percent compliance for all single family homes, State Bill 1383 is the next generation of a similar law to AB 1826.
Need resources, reminders, or tips? Of course you don't, but maybe a friend wants to emulate your awesomeness. Send them this link City of Belmont SB 1383, AND this website which explains both 1826 and 1383.
