First Responders Need Your Help Free CERT Training Begins Soon
Who needs backup in an emergency? First responders do and it could be you!
When a major catastrophe or a community emergency hits, our community needs trained volunteers who can assist first responders. Local trained volunteers are known as The Community Emergency Response Team aka CERT.
Our hometown fire personnel, San Mateo Consolidated Fire Department, along with veteran CERT trainers, rely on nationally recognized FEMA curriculum to train and ready all CERT volunteers in the event of an emergency.
The next CERT Course (it's free) begins in September -- all classes are in person, with hands-on demonstrations and group tasks, taught in the evenings in Foster City -- and after just eight classes you will have a CERT certificate, ready for deployment.
Be advised that the final class is a full Saturday.
Registration is open now at: www.smcfire.eventbrite.com.
Once registered, you will be trained alongside your neighbors and together you will build a strong bond with fellow trained CERT members in Belmont. CERT training is free, though registration is required. Minimum age is 16.

Thank You Community! Alameda Corridor Project Update
On Tuesday night, we hosted the Alameda Corridor Project's first of two community workshops at Carlmont High School to discuss progress on designing the corridor improvements. We were delighted to see between 25 and 30 attendees; big thanks to everyone who was able to join and provide valued community input.
The Alameda de Las Pulgas Corridor Improvement is an ongoing collaboration project between City of Belmont, City of San Carlos, Sequoia Union High School District, and San Carlos School District with the goal to address the corridor’s traffic demand, circulation, bike/ped safety and accessibility, drainage, and more.
At the workshop, the project received generally positive feedback, and some suggestions which will be considered as we move from the 30 to 60 percent project design phase. We look forward to making the necessary changes and updating everyone at the second public workshop, tentatively planned for November.
Stay subscribed to this newsletter for updates, or bookmark www.belmont.gov/AlamedaCorridor for updates as they are posted.

What's My Sewer Basin? Map Helps Residents Locate Service Area
Last week when we told you that Smoke Testing would take place in sewer basins 1, 2 and 14, we heard the collective 'what basin do I live in?' and we're here to answer that.
Residents in Sewer Basins 1, 2, and 14 recently received a letter explaining the maintenance procedure called 'smoke testing' in detail (it's harmless and no action is needed from homeowners unless you have a sewer easement).
The work begins on Sept. 5. You can read the notice and identify your Sewer Basin here: www.belmont.gov/SewerSystem.

New Traffic Signals Coming to Ralston
With school back in session and our residents returning to more normal travel patterns, we’ve noticed that traffic on Ralston Avenue is beginning to return to pre-pandemic levels.
The school drop off hours in particular on the corridor have been very busy these last weeks.
So what is the city doing about it?
Our Public Works Department is currently upgrading Ralston Avenue with an “Adaptive Traffic Signal Control System,” allowing the signals to adjust based on real time traffic conditions. Depending on which direction has the most traffic flow, signal timing is adjusted in real time to allow more green time for the heaviest volumes.
Benefits include reduced congestion and pollution and a decrease in intersection wait time.
This system is being implemented along the Ralston Avenue corridor from Hiller Street to Christian Drive. Since it will mean less time for cars idling, and less time in traffic waiting for signals to turn green, this project is funded through a grant from San Mateo C/CAG via the Transportation Fund for Clean Air (TFCA) program.
Expect all of the signals to be live by end of September.
Curious about the project and its history? Visit the project page to learn more.

Maintenance Work this Week Bike Bridge Safety Updates
Our Public Works Traffic and Street Division replaced all thermoplastic markings on the bike bridge crossing over Hwy 101 this past week.
The thermoplastic from the bridge's 2011 installation had deteriorated to the point that much of it was no longer visible.
Staff chipped and scraped off all remaining markings before applying fresh new thermoplastic striping and safety markings.
Staff also removed all graffiti, weeds, and debris found on the bridge as they worked.
