Belmont PD Uncovers Converter Theft Kit
If you're following Belmont Police Department on Twitter (@BelmontCAPolice) then you already know how heroic our Police are.
If you're not following on Twitter, let us tell you how proud we are that it was our alert officer who noticed something odd about a rented van on our street. A little investigation revealed that the well-trained hunch was right.

Belmont Creek Update at Sunday's LAST Concert in the Park 2022
Longtime locals know full well that Belmont Creek is a natural waterway in our own backyard. We're working on a project to restore it.
In partnership with our neighbors in San Carlos, the county, and California Department of Water Resources* we're restoring our beautiful creek to its natural status.
Come on down to Sunday’s final free Concert in the Park (1 p.m., Twin Pines Park) and meet Public Work staff who will tell you all about our creek flow restoration, how we’re managing invasive species, controlling erosion, and working with our neighbors and partners to restore our creek.
Take a peek at some of the tools we're using to prepare for the project.
Don't miss out on our stormwater project, too. Staff will be on site to share our latest news on that exciting project as well.
*CORRECTION: Last week's newsletter incorrectly named the state department partnering on the Belmont Creek project. The agency name has been corrected as identified above.

Draft 2023-2030 Housing Element Update
In case you missed our City Council meeting this week, you might not have heard the latest news about our Housing Element.
The draft 2023-30 Housing Element and CEQA Programmatic Environmental Impact Report analyzing its potential impacts were released on June 30, 2022, triggering a 45-day public review period.
This year, public engagement on this topic has included two community workshops, two Planning Commission meetings, and three City Council meetings.
On Tuesday, after a robust evening of community input and Council discussion, staff received direction to route the draft Housing Element to the State Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD), following incorporation of Planning Commission recommended revisions.
Once HCD has reviewed and commented on the plan, both the Belmont Planning Commission and City Council will hold another round of public hearings to review and adopt the final documents.
For past meeting materials and additional ways to provide input, please visit www.belmont.gov/housingelement. The public comment period will run through Monday, Aug. 15.
We thank everyone who has already engaged in this long, but worthy process, and we encourage all who wish to still do so before the upcoming deadline.

Samtrans Announces New Bus Network
In March 2022, the SamTrans Board of Directors approved a set of changes to the SamTrans bus network as part of the Reimagine SamTrans project. This new network was crafted after careful consideration of the feedback received over the course of two and a half years.
The new bus network will be delivered over time, between 2022-2023 and is designed to achieve:
-
Equity: Prioritize buses to high need communities
-
Efficiency: Create faster, reliable service through more direct and consolidated routes
-
Connections: Provide expanded all-day service, and more service to transit hubs and job centers
SamTrans is now using this valuable input to implement a new, streamlined bus network with:
- Brand new service areas and connections
- Faster and more direct routes
- Simpler, easier to understand routes
But it doesn't stop there. Even after these changes take effect Aug. 7, SamTrans will further implement the full Reimagine SamTrans service plan.
Major service changes that will be implemented on Aug. 7 include the following:
New Routes New local Route 142 will serve some areas previously served by Routes 140 and 141. Existing school-oriented service on Routes 110, 112, 130, 140, 141, 250, 251, 278 and 286 will continue to be provided on the following new Routes 10, 12, 30, 40, 41, 42, 50, 51, 78 and 86.
Consolidated Routes Local Routes 274, 275 and 278 will be consolidated into Route 278. Local Routes 251 and 256 will be consolidated into a revised Route 251. SamTrans will consolidate school-oriented Routes 39, 55, 95 and 84 into Routes 37, 53, 61 and 83, respectively. In each case, two existing school-oriented routes will become one route that serves more neighborhoods to the same schools. In some cases, this would result in a longer ride for some students, but service to almost all areas with existing ridership would still be available.
Eliminated Routes Local Route 140 will be eliminated and replaced by service on Routes 141 and 142. School-oriented Route 80 will be eliminated. Morning service on school-oriented Routes 85 and 87 will be discontinued.
SamTrans encourages everyone to visit its updated timetable for a summary of all the route changes that will take effect on Aug. 7, 2022. For more information or questions, contact Customer Service at 1-800-660-4287 or email info@samtrans.com.

Safety Improvements This Week
You might have seen our Public Works staff out improving visibility on our roads this week -- and we hoped you waved a hello when you did.
This week, the Public Works Traffic and Street Division staff applied thermo-plastic bike lane striping on Ralston Avenue between Villa Avenue and the east entrance of Notre Dame de Namur University.
Staff also painted a new crosswalk on Ralston Avenue west of South Road to accompany the Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon (RRFB) pedestrian warning light system recently installed.
When you see our crews out working on our streets, please slow down and following any detour instructions. We thank you for your cooperation and patience.
Safer Crosswalk on Ralston Avenue
Did you notice something new along Ralston Avenue during your driving, walking, or biking commute this week?
Yes, you did see new safety improvements for pedestrians. We've just completed the installation of new crossing enhancements along Ralston Avenue between South Road and Alameda de Las Pulgas.
Technically, the safety equipment is know as a Rectangular Rapid-Flashing Beacons (RRFB). These devices have grown in popularity for their eye-catching appeal, producing more cars to yield and increasing a crosswalks safety. The system is similar to a traditional crosswalk, except the pair of pedestrian crossing signs are equipped with rapid flashing high-intensity LEDs mounted just below the crossing sign. The flashers light up when a pedestrian presses the button, indicating they'd like to cross.
The beacons remain flashing for a pre-determined time set by crossing distance, then shut off until the next pedestrian comes along. Although these exceptionally noticeable rapid flashing lights help to advise oncoming motorists, pedestrians should never assume that cars seem them. Wait until the car has stopped before crossing.
These RRFB systems are mainly prioritized at mid-block crossing locations and where heightened crossing volumes may exist on higher traveled corridors.
When you have a moment, come test out one of the RRFBs along Ralston Avenue near Twin Pines Park, Chula Vista Drive, Maywood Drive, and Villa Avenue. Be on the lookout for more safety improvements brought to you by your Public Works Team.
