Belmont Weekly Update - June 24, 2022 |
|
Happy Summer, Belmont!
Yes, it IS already summertime. City staff has worked hard to get us all ready for summer. You may have seen our crews in our parks, and on our roads, or in our City Hall ensuring that our residents can enjoy their lives to the fullest.
In our Infrastructure and Mobility section of today's newsletter, we highlight the completion of Phase 1 of our Pavement Preservation Project. We appreciate the community’s patience on big projects like these.
We are excited to deliver on our promises made when the community supported the City's Measure I sales tax. Over the last five years, since implementation of Measure I, we have improved the City's Pavement Condition Index from 54 to 68. A 26 percent improvement!
Below, you'll see an invitation to join us on Monday, June 27 to hear from staff on the process of our Housing Allocation. We hope you can listen in and ask any questions you're curious about. There will be more opportunity to discuss this in the coming weeks.
Finally, we're so proud of our Belmont Police Department for our team member's involvement in the Special Olympics' Torch Run held today (Friday, June 24). You might have seen our police staff get handed the torch at North Road & El Camino Real and proceed south to San Carlos. I hope you stopped to give them a honk of support.
We love our active, engaged community, and have prioritized keeping our residents informed through newsletters like this one. You opening this email to read our news inspires us to continue to provide updates to our community on the City's Strategic Focus Areas, and on all things Belmont.

Summer's First Wildfire
Did Tuesday's wildfire in Redwood City remind you to update your go-bag? Or ... to make one?
The Edgewood Fire in Redwood City got everyone's attention on the Peninsula as the smoke billowed over the hillside and PG&E shut off power in parts of Belmont to reduce the fire spread risk.
City staff monitoring the situation posted updates to our social media channels, and we thank the residents who shared the news. By Tuesday evening, fire crews had the 25-acre grass fire under control, power slowly came back on, and the closed roads were opened again.
As the summer heat surges begin, it's a good time to ensure that you have all of the safety bookmarks that you need.

On Thursday, we celebrated Women in Engineering Day by recognizing our female engineers.
Bozhena Palatnik, P.E., Senior Civil Engineer, and our Associate Civil Engineers Elizabeth Wada, P.E., and Selena Lau P.E., are anchors to the Belmont Public Works Department, Engineering Division.
Comprising 60 percent of our licensed engineers on staff, we rely heavily on their engineering expertise in the areas of roadway construction, stormwater and sewer design and construction, and civil engineering review for developments ranging from single family homes to multi-story new buildings.
Kudos to you three and all the female engineers who've carved a path, broken down barriers, and worked extra hard to break into STEM fields. We need more like you!

Bay Area Health Officials Urge Awareness About Monkeypox as Summer Travel and Gatherings Begin
Redwood City — As the summer season begins with increased travel and major events and gatherings, Bay Area Health Officers urge people to protect themselves against the monkeypox virus, which spreads through prolonged skin-to-skin contact and bodily fluids, such as through crowded settings or sexual contact.
The alert from nine health jurisdictions comes as cases – which appear in individuals as distinctive rashes and sores that can look like blisters or pimples – continue to emerge in the Bay Area, the nation and the globe. Monkeypox is not new, but this is the first time the virus has spread in so many countries at once.
