Root Foaming Gets Rolling
In an ongoing effort to conduct preventative maintenance on the sanitary sewer mains, Public Works maintenance staff has scheduled Dukes Root Foaming to treat 43,000 feet of sewer main city-wide. The root foaming project will start June 13 and is anticipated to be complete in early July.
What is Root Foam?
Root foam is a thick, shaving cream consistency foam will be released into the sanitary sewer lines to kill roots on contact within the line, and help prevent root regrowth for 3 years. Trees and other above ground vegetation are not harmed. Razorooter® II, the product used is the only diquat-based herbicide registered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for controlling nuisance tree roots in sanitary sewer line collection systems and received a classification of “evidence of non-carcinogenicity for humans” (USEPA Diquat R.E.D. Facts, July 1995). Root control is an important element of an effective overall strategy to maintain sewer systems.
Duke’s Root Foaming staff placed door hangers in advance of root foaming to inform residents of upcoming treatment. They will also notify residents if they need access to an easement on their property. For questions or more information, you may contact the Public Works Department at (650) 595-7425.

Trenchless Pipe Patching Repair on Lassen Drive
As part of the City’s routine public sewer system inspections, Public Works sewer maintenance crew discovered abandoned lateral connection with roots intruding and blocking the sewer main on Lassen Drive. The defect was discovered while performing routine video inspection of the City’s sewer pipe in the area.
Sewer maintenance staff patched the defective pipe area using the Pipe Patch method; trenchless one-piece jointless, seamless, pipe within a pipe that seals the pipe from within for smaller pipe repairs. This process is a cost-effective trenchless technology and replaces the need to dig out the area for the needed repairs.
Attention Drivers
June 15-16 - The Public Works Department will be closing the second westbound lane on Ralston Avenue, between Vista Point and Ralston Ranch Road for the Parks Department to perform vegetation removal.
The closure will be Wednesday June 15 to Thursday June 16 between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Emergency vehicles will have access at all times. Bicycle traffic will share the lane through the controlled traffic plan on west bound Ralston Avenue
