 Belmont District Elections Public Hearing
Join the City Council at a special and regular meeting on March 8th at 5:30 pm
The months-long process to create new City Council district boundaries is expected to wrap up in the coming weeks, with the final public hearings on selection of a new district map and discussion on an at-large Mayor and election sequence.
The virtual study session will begin at 5:30 pm and continue the conversation at the regular meeting. See the meetings-agendas-minutes for the agenda and ZOOM login information.
Why this matters
City Council districts determine which neighborhoods vote together for the purpose of electing a City Council member. State and federal laws call for communities of like interests to be in the same district so they have more power to elect representatives to their government.
What to know
You still have time to review the maps submitted so far and share your thoughts with the council via email and during its public hearing on March 8, 2022.
Once these Districts are created, then local governments must redistrict at least once every 10 years, based on federal census data, to reflect changes in population and to ensure that all districts have about the same number of residents.
The city’s demographer and City Council have reviewed more than 50 proposed maps and community feedback at its February 22 meeting for the new boundaries and provided feedback to narrow down the preferred options.
You can see the maps, including the maps created by the city’s demographer based on the previous feedback, on this interactive online map viewer.
