A few months ago, an “Atmospheric River” kicked of the rainy season with over five inches rain. While a great start to a possibly drought-busting winter season, the storm was so severe that it exposed a problem with the underground storm drain system below the Ralston Middle School field. At some point in the past, a storm drain which was built around 1980 failed and the rainstorm forced enough water through the failed pipe to cause a sink hole that became exposed in late October.
This meant that the field was unusable, and a potentially costly repair was required. The City’s Park and Rec Department has a joint use and maintenance agreement with the school district for use of this field, which meant much of the community was impacted. Fortunately, the School District and multiple City Departments collaborated to secure the site, investigate the cause, and make an expedited in-house repair, completed this week. Total costs between the District and the City were shared relatively evenly. Belmont Public Works Operations team took the lead on the repair, reconnected the 18-inch storm drainpipe, and backfilled the sinkhole to reestablish the turf.
Another great example of our public agencies partnering to share costs and responsibility to repair a critical sports field. A longer-term storm drain enhancement project may still be needed, but for now, the field will be ready for use this spring.
