Big shout out to the American Canyon Fire Protection District, the American Canyon Police Department, Vallejo Fire Department, and Napa Co. Fire Department, and City staff for the rapid response to last weekend’s Dutch Flat Fire and for working together to keep our community safe. I also want to recognize our City staff for their ongoing proactive vegetation management which prevented further calamity.
Public safety is a core local government responsibility to its residents. Every two years, the City surveys the community, and the City Council knows public safety is a priority. Taxpayers fund public safety operations – including last weekend’s response. This November, American Canyon voters have an important opportunity to ensure your tax dollars remain under local control and available to fund community priorities such as public safety operations. ALERT Napa County service is free and provides critical and non-critical alerts in a variety of situations, including severe weather, planned and unexpected road closures, missing persons, evacuations, and other important public safety information. It’s the updated version of the former “Nixle” system (which is no longer used). Last weekend, I learned some residents didn’t receive expected emergency notifications. Even if you previously signed up for the “Nixle” system, please take a moment to re-sign up for the new system ALERT Napa County. It’s possible the transition from Nixle to ALERT Napa County did not automatically capture all former users, so please take a moment to re-sign up just in case.
Finally, I want to wish all of our American Canyon 4-H members and families the very best at this year’s Napa Town & Country Fair, taking place Aug. 6-9. We are proud to have you represent the American Canyon community and appreciate the hard work and dedication you’ve invested throughout the year. We look forward to celebrating your accomplishments and wish all our exhibitors a successful, rewarding, and memorable fair.

National Night Out reminds us that creating a safe community is a shared responsibility. It begins with getting to know our neighbors, building relationships with the men and women who serve our community, and working together to make American Canyon stronger, safer, and the best place to call home. This Tuesday, Aug. 4, we will come together to celebrate National Night Out, an annual tradition that strengthens the partnership between our residents, the American Canyon Police Department, the American Canyon Fire Protection District, and City leadership. It is an evening dedicated to connection, conversations, and celebrating our community.
As a retired police officer, I’ve seen firsthand how trust and communication make all the difference. Some of the most meaningful conversations happen outside of an emergency, at neighborhood gatherings, community events, and block parties where people have the opportunity to build relationships with the officers, firefighters, and City leaders who serve them every day.
This is why National Night Out is one of my favorite events of the year. Visiting neighborhood block parties throughout American Canyon gives me the opportunity to meet new residents, reconnect with familiar faces, and see firsthand the pride people have in their neighborhoods. It is also an opportunity to recognize the outstanding men and women of our American Canyon Police Department and the American Canyon Fire Protection District, whose dedication, professionalism, and commitment help keep our community safe each day.
I encourage you to join your neighbors this Tuesday evening and take part in National Night Out. Whether you’re hosting a block party, attending one, or simply stopping by to say hello, I hope you’ll take time to connect with those around you and thank our public safety team. I look forward to seeing many of you as we celebrate our community together.

Green Island Road Reconstruction Project Update
Progress continues on the Green Island Road/Commerce Boulevard intersection improvement project! Crews moved forward with paving this week, bringing the project one step closer to completion.
Please use caution when traveling through the construction zone, follow posted traffic controls, and reduce speeds for the safety of everyone in the area.

Shenandoah Park Tree Replacement Update
Right Tree. Right Place. Right Future.
Work continues on the Shenandoah Park tree replacement project. The Blue Spruce has now been removed, marking an important milestone in the project. Crews are currently conducting soil testing and soil refurbishment to prepare the site for a Deodar Cedar, a species better adapted to American Canyon's climate and growing conditions.
Healthy trees start with healthy soil. This phase of the project helps ensure the new tree has the strong foundation it needs to thrive for years to come. By investing in both the tree and the conditions that support its growth, we are following the principle of "Right Tree, Right Place, Right Future" and creating a healthier, more resilient park landscape for future generations to enjoy.

Newell Open Space Trail Update
This week, grading work was completed at Newell Open Space as part of the City’s ongoing efforts to maintain, enhance, and preserve this valued community space. This work helps support the continued upkeep of the trail area and ensures a better experience for residents and visitors who enjoy exploring the open space.
We appreciate the community’s continued support as we work to care for and improve the natural spaces that make American Canyon a special place to enjoy.

Wetlands Trail Closure
The City of American Canyon has completed geotechnical testing at the Wetlands as part of ongoing efforts to support future improvements and enhance the community’s experience in this treasured natural area.
Crews recently conducted Cone Penetration Testing (CPT) and soil borings along the trail between Wetlands Edge and beyond Greenwing to better understand existing ground conditions. The information collected will help guide the design of future projects, including potential boardwalks, scenic overlooks, and habitat improvements.
Thank you to residents and visitors for their patience during this work. These efforts are an important step toward creating a safer, more accessible, and enjoyable wetlands experience for the community.

Proactive Maintenance Helps Protect Our Community.
Beginning in August, City crews will remove vegetation from creeks and open space water outlets throughout American Canyon to improve water flow, reduce the risk of localized flooding and help keep local waterways clear.
Residents may see crews working in different areas of the community during August and early September.
Work Schedule:
• Aug. 3–6: Rio Del Mar Ditch
• Aug. 10–13: Elliott Bridge & Wetlands Edge
• Aug. 17–20: Wetlands Edge & Silver Oak Trail at Shenandoah
• Sept. 1–4: Additional locations (if necessary)

Cash For Grass
The City of American Canyon is encouraging residents to take advantage of the Cash for Grass Program, which provides eligible participants with the opportunity to receive a rebate for replacing water-intensive turf with water-wise landscaping.
Converting your lawn to a drought-tolerant landscape helps conserve water, reduces outdoor maintenance, and supports a more sustainable and resilient community. The program also offers resources to help residents plan their landscape transformation, including design guidance, recommended plant lists, and information about program requirements.
