Hello,
American Canyon stands out because our community stands together. Whether volunteering to support a community effort or simply showing up to make a difference, our residents share a genuine commitment to improving the place we call home. That ongoing spirit of service plays a big role in what makes American Canyon the best place to live, work and play, and something we’re proud to celebrate during National Volunteer Week.
As part of this celebration, we are proud to recognize this year’s Gateway Award nominees: Davet Mohammed, Hugh Marquez, Leon Garcia, Vanessa Murillo Lara, Scott Myer, Beth Marcus, Scott Thomason, Allen Quisenberry, Christine Barnett, Rob Hall and Jaymie Hall, Heidi Zipay, and Kasama Lee, all whom exemplify outstanding volunteer service and dedication to our community. In addition, the prior Gateway Award winners (affectionately known as “Gators”) will bestow a Lifetime Achievement Award to Fran Lemos and Community Achievement Award to Leon Garcia.
The awardees will be honored at the Community Recognition Dinner on Saturday, April 25, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the DoubleTree Hotel and Spa. Please join me in celebrating these individuals. Tickets are still available to purchase here.
Tomorrow is your next opportunity to show up! You can take part in the Earth Day Volunteer cleanup at Wetlands Edge Park from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Don’t miss this opportunity to support environmental stewardship and help preserve the natural beauty of our community.
Finally, I’m excited to share that the Summer Activity Guide is now available and registration is open. Explore the wide variety of programs and services planned for you and your family this summer, from youth summer camps and adult enrichment classes to sports leagues, and more. We have something for everyone.

Over the past year, many of you have shared concerns and ideas about needs that go beyond what our day‑to‑day General Fund can support. In response, the city has worked strategically to ensure every dollar is carefully directed toward the programs and services that matter most to our community.
Our priorities remain clear:
- Maintaining the infrastructure we all rely on.
- Supporting community events and neighborhood improvements.
- Providing strong and reliable police services.
- Keeping American Canyon safe, welcoming and vibrant.
We are committed to a community-centered approach, making thoughtful decisions that reflect the needs, priorities and values of those who call American Canyon home.
Community Survey on City Priorities
As part of this effort, the city is conducting a polling survey to better understand residents’ priorities related to City services, facilities and long-term community needs. This survey is one step in exploring a potential sales tax measure for the November general election.
- The survey began on April 4 and will run for approximately one week, or until 250 responses are received.
- To ensure a broad cross-section of perspectives, registered voters are randomly selected and contacted through various methods.
If you receive a phone call or text asking you to participate, please know it is legitimate. I encourage you to take a few minutes to share your thoughts, your input matters.
What This Means, and What It Doesn’t
Polling helps the city better understand the community's awareness of and appetite for additional taxes.
- This survey is informational only, it does not advocate for any specific outcome.
- The feedback gathered will help inform next steps, including whether to consider a ballot measure.
Please note: The City Council has not decided whether to place a measure on the November ballot. Any proposal involving a tax increase would require voter approval. The survey results will be reviewed at the City Council meeting on May 5, and I encourage community members to participate in that discussion.

CWEA Quarter Century Award
Francisco Ramirez, The City of American Canyon's Water Distribution Supervisor, was recently recognized as one of nine recipients of the Quarter Century Award by the California Water Environment Association. This honor celebrates individuals who have dedicated 25 years or more to the water industry and have made significant contributions through their intellectual and technical knowledge. The award was presented at the CWEA Annual Conference, held April 7-10 in Sacramento.
