Fernside Blvd Pavement Repair to Begin This Week

This week, the Pavement Management Project Phase 44 will begin construction on Fernside Blvd from Versailles Ave to High St, with intermittent work expected to continue until early November. See the project webpage for updated construction information.

At times, the work will require a half street closure that maintains two-way traffic. Fernside access from side streets may be restricted; please follow any posted vehicle and pedestrian detour signs. Access to the new Tilden Way roundabout will remain open. Make sure to check for No Parking signs this month.

After the pavement repair is complete, the project will implement near-term Fernside Project traffic calming improvements for this corridor. This will include new flashing beacons, new marked crosswalks, and quick-build safety interventions for all modes. Some elements, like the flashing beacons, may not be constructed until 2027.

As a reminder in case helpful, below is information about what's happening in this area:

Near-Term Fernside Blvd Traffic Calming & Bikeways Project

When completed, the Pavement Management Project Phase 44 will implement the Near-Term Fernside Boulevard Traffic Calming & Bikeways Project to reduce speeds and improve traffic safety on Fernside Blvd from Versailles Ave to High St.

With a concept approved by City Council in March 2025, the new street configuration will be similar to Fernside Blvd east of High St, with two travel lanes, painted buffered bike lanes, and no center turn lane. As a response to the public’s request for more pedestrian safety elements, the City will add quick-build pedestrian median islands to shorten pedestrian crossing distances. The project will also include new flashing beacons at crosswalks across Fernside Blvd at the following intersections:

  • Versailles/Fernside -- western crossing
  • Harvard/Fernside -- western crossing
  • Cornell/Fernside -- both crossings

The design concept was selected after extensive public outreach regarding the future of Fernside Blvd, ultimately resulting in near-term and long-term design plans.

Next Steps for the Gibbons Drive Area & Gibbons/Fernside/High

In November 2025, City Council approved the following quick-build traffic calming in the neighborhood around Gibbons Drive:

  1. Interim safety measure at Gibbons/High/Fernside. Reduce turning speeds onto Gibbons Drive by installing a paint-and-post bulb-out at the southwest corner (no turn restriction). To be constructed in 2026 and early 2027 with the Pavement Management Project Phase 44 webpage.
  2. Pilot roundabouts and new pedestrian crossings inside the neighborhood. Reduce vehicle speeds and improve pedestrian access by constructing quick-build roundabouts with temporary Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) curb ramps at the Gibbons/Northwood/Southwood and Southwood/Bayo Vista/Fairview intersections. These are approved only as pilot projects to test these designs before making them permanent. Design and construction in 2027.
  3. New speed humps. Add a total of four speed humps at locations on Gibbons Drive, Southwood Drive, and Cambridge Drive. To be constructed in early 2027.

Per City Council direction, after these improvements are installed, staff will collect data and return to Transportation Commission and City Council with future traffic calming measures that may include making the roundabouts permanent, eliminating the left turn from Gibbons to High Street for the Fernside Boulevard Traffic Calming & Bikeways project, or other options based on the data and staff recommendations.
