As of today, the school year has begun for most Alameda K-12 students! Help keep our community's kids safe by taking extra care on the roadways during school drop-off and pick-up times, especially near schools.
If you drive during school drop-off and pick-up times, make sure to slow down and watch for kids walking and biking. The top two behaviors associated with the most severe crashes in Alameda are unsafe speeds and failure to yield to a pedestrian; and children are disproportionately injured in collisions near schools.
If you are traveling to school, see below for more safety tips:
AUSD launched a new webpage with information for families considering e-bikes for their children. To keep your child as safe as possible, make sure to review these resources before shopping:
This year, the brand-new Wood Middle School campus is opening its doors and Otis Elementary students are moving into the temporary campus next door, so please take extra precautions around Otis Dr and Grand St as this area will have more kids and new traffic patterns.
AUSD collaborated with City staff as they developed school access plans. If you are a Wood or Otis school family, check your ParentSquare for an AUSD newsletter with information. Otis families can also refer to these maps showing suggested routes to the temporary Otis campus: bike routes and park and walk routes.
Finally, keep an eye out for a group of elementary school students riding bikes together with adult leads, as volunteers are organizing a Bike Bus from Krusi Park to the Otis temporary campus (not a City or AUSD program). A large portion of the route will be on Alameda's protected bikeways, including Shore Line Dr from Broadway to Grand, Grand St from Shore Line to Otis, and Otis Dr eastbound from Grand to the temporary Otis campus.
