Celebrating Alameda’s Leadership in Sustainability and Climate Action

The City of Alameda is proud to be recognized by the Institute for Local Government with several Beacon Program awards this year! 🌿

  • 🥇Platinum Award for achieving a 29% reduction in communitywide greenhouse gas emissions.
  • 🥈Silver Award for Sustainability Best Practices.
  • 💡 Leadership & Innovation Award for Cross-Agency Collaboration in Climate Adaptation, celebrating Alameda’s leadership in the Oakland Alameda Adaptation Committee (OAAC).

Through the OAAC, Alameda has been working closely with regional partners to tackle the challenges of sea level rise and strengthen community resilience. We’re also excited to share that our partners — City of Oakland, Port of Oakland, and East Bay Regional Park District — were recognized for their outstanding collaborative OAAC leadership as well.

Together, we’re making great strides toward a more sustainable and resilient future for the Bay Area! 🌎

Helping Our Neighbors and the Planet: Reducing Food Waste in Alameda

Food Bank

Each year, millions of pounds of edible food in Alameda County are kept out of landfills and redirected to feed local families, thanks to a strong network of food recovery partners. This work supports about 1 in 4 residents experiencing food insecurity while also cutting greenhouse gas emissions 🌎and conserving natural resources 🌱.

Under California law SB 1383, large food-generating businesses must donate surplus food instead of throwing it away — but every donation, whether required or voluntary, helps build a stronger, more resilient community. Visit Stop Waste to learn more about food recovery in Alameda County.

At a time when demand at the Alameda Food Bank is rising, especially amid uncertainty in federal food benefits, there are ways you can help:

  • 🙋‍♂️ Volunteer or donate to the Alameda Food Bank or similar nonprofits — and check if your employer offers matching!
  • 🗣️ Advocate for food recovery and hunger-reduction policies.
  • 🏪 Encourage food businesses to donate their surplus edible food.
  • 🥦 Reduce wasted food at home — visit StopFoodWaste.org

If you or someone you know needs food assistance, visit the Alameda Food Bank.
