Central Ave Construction Update - Paving Begins Next Week!

NEW: Paving begins September 30th!

Paving along Central Ave between Lincoln Ave and Sherman St is scheduled to take place between September 30th and October 3rd. In order to complete this work, No Parking will be enforced and traffic could be slower than normal or stopped for a few minutes at a time while the operations take place and until the pavement is safe to drive on. Residents and businesses whose driveway access will be impacted during paving will be notified directly. Two-way traffic between Lincoln Ave and Fifth St will resume once paving is complete and the Contractor determines it is safe to do so.

Temporary lane markers will be in place for a few weeks following paving, until permanent striping can be installed.

Stage 1 Paving near Encinal School - July 2025

Current Direction of Detour

Until paving is completed, one-way traffic and detours remain in place. Traffic is detoured in a clockwise direction through the construction area: westbound on Central Ave to Pacific Ave, then eastbound to Fifth St.

What's Next: Stage 3 Construction

Stage 3 Construction involves temporarily closing the intersection of Pacific Ave at Main St/Central Ave while the roundabout is built. Nearby residents, businesses, and Seaplane Ferry Terminal users will receive more information directly. Stage 3 Construction is expected to start after two-way traffic resumes along Central Ave between Lincoln and 5th, and to end in mid-spring, subject to weather and other unforeseen circumstances.

How to Use Roundabouts

When Driving, approach slowly and use caution. Yield to people walking and biking in crossings when you enter and exit the roundabout. Yield to drivers in the circle before entering. Drive with the flow of traffic counterclockwise around the center island.

When Walking, use marked crosswalks. You have the right of way, but always stop, look both ways, and listen before crossing. Do not cross to the center of the roundabout.

When Biking, go slow and yield to pedestrians. Be aware that some pedestrians may be unable to see or hear you and may not be able to move quickly out of your path of travel. Before crossing the street, look both ways to check that drivers see and yield to you. You may also choose to ride through the roundabout with vehicle traffic, following the instructions under “When Driving” above.

About the Central Ave Project

The Central Avenue project will improve safety for all street users and reduce vehicle delays. It includes a roadway reconfiguration with two motor vehicle travel lanes, a two-way left-turn lane as a center lane, and bikeways, in addition to enhanced pedestrian crossings, improved bus stops, pavement resurfacing, and street trees/raingardens. It is building roundabouts at Main/Pacific/Central, Third/Taylor/Central, Fourth/Ballena/Central. Roundabouts reduce the types of crashes where people are seriously hurt or killed by up to 78 percent when compared to signalized intersections, per federal data.
