Clement Avenue/Tilden Way Site Tour

City staff/consultant team is asking community members to participate in a site tour with the Mayor and City Council of the Clement Avenue/Tilden Way project on Wed, March 15 at 12 noon - corner of Fernside Blvd. and Tilden Way - special meeting announcement is shown here

To allow for more community participation, City staff delayed this Clement/Tilden concept agenda item from the City Council meeting on Tues, March 7 to the City Council meeting on Tues, March 21, and shifted the agenda item from the consent calendar to a regular meeting agenda item - staff report is here

Concept

The Clement/Tilden project uses the abandoned railroad right-of-way at Clement Avenue and Tilden Way to extend the Cross Alameda Trail between Broadway and the Miller-Sweeney/Fruitvale Bridge and to improve the truck and bus routes.  The concept includes bikeways and walkways with wayfinding signs, a road diet, a westbound Clement Avenue extension, open space, stormwater gardens, bus stop and lighting improvements, a dog park and a roundabout at the Blanding/Tilden/Fernside intersection, which requires about six parking spaces to be removed on Fernside Blvd.

Background

Road diets reduce crashes up to 47%.  Roundabouts reduce fatal and severe injury crashes up to 78% compared to traffic signals.  This project had two rounds of public outreach, and connects to the City's Clement Avenue project and to the City of Oakland's Fruitvale Avenue project.  In 2017, the Alameda County Transportation Commission awarded a Measure BB grant to the City of Alameda totaling $8.4 million for this project, which totals $10 million with the local match.  Construction is expected in mid-2024.
