Swim Centers Update: City staff is working closely with School District staff on the project to rebuild Emma Hood, the Alameda High School Swim Center. The District is doing investigative work such as soil sampling, which will inform the design options. A full public input process including outreach to School District constituents and the broader Alameda community is anticipated to start later this fall.

On October 19, staff is bringing a proposal for City Aquatic Center locations and funding to the City Council. At its September 8 meeting, the Recreation and Parks Commission reviewed the City Aquatic Center concept, location options, and funding. The Commission recommended the City Aquatic Center to the City Council, located at the western side of Sweeney Park near Constitution Way and Atlantic Avenue.

Lincoln Park Playground Update: Installation is starting this week and will be complete in approximately six weeks, with the playground open to the public by the end of October.

ACI Route Reviews

ACI is launching an educational campaign later this month to help their customers know what belongs in each bin. Their staff will do a visual survey ("lid flips") of a random sample of trash, recycling, and compost containers. This review is now required by State law to ensure everyone is recycling and composting properly. If they find bins with prohibited items (for example, if recyclables or food scraps are found in the trash, or if plastic or glass are found in the green organics bin), ACI will provide the customer with a notice that includes what they found and how the customer can fix the issue going forward. For more details on this program and to learn what belongs in each bin, visit www.alamedasorts.com.

COVID-19 Update

  • In Alameda, we saw COVID cases decline in August, but health officials warn that there are 5 to 8 times as many COVID cases in the community compared with what’s reported.
  • An updated booster is now available for everyone 12 and older who is vaccinated and at least two months out from a previous booster. The new bivalent boosters target the original virus and the Omicron variants circulating now. Appointments are available at local pharmacies or through your health care provider.
