- Searching for Jimmy Lyons – Film Screening and Q&A: Alameda Premiere of the jazz documentary exploring the music and life of Jimmy Lyons (a singer/songwriter and long-time resident of Alameda). Jimmy was a legendary jazz artist who wrote lyrics about love, family, existentialism, politics, myth, meaning, and once penned a song for Johnny Mathis. Lyons was also arrested in New York City at the Gaslight Cafe for his unique vocal style and acquitted with "the right to expand the boundaries of poetry." - Free Bike Repair Day with BikeMobile: We want to see more families riding their bikes to the Alameda Free Library. That’s why we’ve invited the BikeMobile to provide free tune ups & repairs for parents and children. The BikeMobile can fix flat tires, adjust brakes and gears, and even replace broken or worn out parts like chains, seats, and tires. The only thing it can’t do is replace missing wheels or gears. While the mechanics work on your bike they’ll explain how to keep it running smooth. Bike or no bike, everyone is welcome to attend to learn about maintenance, safety, and more! This is a first come, first serve event. Space is limited to 20 people. Bring your bikes to the Alameda Free Library on August 17th between 11 am - 2 pm. We look forward to seeing you there!
- Computer Lab Workshop: Google Sheets 2022: Join us in the Alameda Free Library Computer Lab to learn about Google Docs, the free, online word processing client that is provided with every Google account. This class will be the first in a series covering each of the Google Apps in depth. We will briefly explore elements of word processing with this element of Google Drive. Learn how to edit your text documents across all of your devices. You must have a Gmail email address in order to take this course. All ages are welcome to attend this workshop. Prerequisites: a Google Account (and password) to work on the stations in the computer lab. Feel free to bring your personal laptop or device to follow along as well. Limited slots are available. - August Movie Night: Join us for a screening of “To Olivia - The True Story of Roald Dahl” on August 31 at 6:00 PM at the Main Library Stafford Room.
Event descriptions – ongoing events:
- Teen Advisory Board: Do you wish the library would do more events and programs that you’re interested in? Have you been anxiously awaiting a new book and you want the library to buy it? Do you need an impressive membership to put on your applications and resumes? Join the Teen Advisory Board (TAB) to let the library know what you’re interested in. The Teen Advisory Board is your chance to make a difference in the library for yourself and other teens in Alameda. Members of the Teen Advisory Board will plan be involved in planning Teen programs and choose teen events. Teen Advisory Board members will earn community service hours for every meeting and event that they participate in. We won’t be meeting in August but will meet in September, please check the web calendar for date and time.
- Teen Book Club: Teen book club members choose what we read from a variety of titles and genres each month and every book club member gets a free copy of the book to keep. The title we will be reading this month and discussing in August is An Enchantment of Ravens by Margaret Rogerson. All teens, ages 13 to 18, are invited to join the book group. *How book club's timeline works: The monthly title will be the book we're discussing when we meet that month. For example, you would pick up your copy on July 6 and read it by August 3, then we meet on August 3 to talk about it, and vote on the next book to read. Registration link is on the calendar. - Dungeons & Dragons: Want to try Dungeons & Dragons but can’t find a group? Looking for a new party? Come to our Dungeons & Dragons Teen Meetup! We will be playing a stand-alone adventure in 5th edition. No previous experience required. Character sheets will be provided as well as rules explanations and dice.
- Game Break: Don’t forget to take a break…A GAME BREAK! Try out our new games and/or watch others play. No Registration needed, masks strongly encouraged. Teens only!
- Queer Social Club (QSC): Queer Social Club Looking for a casual place to connect with your queer community? Good news! It’s at the library! Chat with like-minded teens about queer media, share LGBTQ+ books, participate in fun activities, or just hang out at QSC. Every 3rd Tuesday of the month from 4:30-5:30pm. - Award Winner Book Club: Join us for an engaging literary discussion! Our featured book in August is Mr. Penumbra's 24-hour Bookstore by Robin Sloan, winner of the 2013 Alex Award. Print and e-book copies are available in our Alameda Free Library collection and print copies through our LINK+ library partners. A limited number of free copies provided by the Friends of the Alameda Library will also be available in May at the reference desk of the Main Library. - Lawyers in the Library: The Lawyers in the Library program provides free 15 minute consultations by phone with a volunteer attorney who will provide guidance on legal matters. Examples of areas covered include landlord/tenant disputes, probate matters, employment problems and other general consumer issues. Please see online calendar for registration form and instructions.
- Me, MyShelf, and I Book Club: Join the Alameda Free Library’s Biography and Memoir Book Club - Me, MyShelf, and I, for a literary discussion! Copies are available in our Alameda Free Library collection and through our LINK+ library partners. - Alameda Library Writers’ Group: This group is open to all adult writers looking for an opportunity to connect and share with other writers. At the zoom meeting you are welcome to share your writing and everyone will be given a writing prompt. Whatever your genre, you are welcome to join the group!
- Mystery Book Club: Join the Alameda Free Library’s Mystery Book Club for a fun and engaging literary discussion! Copies are available in our Alameda Free Library collection and through our LINK+ library partners. A limited number of free copies provided by the Friends of the Alameda Free Library will also be available soon at the Main Library. - Sneak Peek Saturday: Alameda Free Library's special reading program featuring general adult fiction and non-fiction titles. Join us every Saturday on Youtube for a virtual adult story time.
