New Infrastructure at Alameda Point

If you've been out to Alameda Point recently, you probably noticed construction near Spirits Alley. This area will ultimately have all new backbone infrastructure, including new sewer, storm, street lighting, landscaping, and bike, pedestrian, and transit facilities. You'll experience a few road closures and detours while this work is taking place but local businesses remain open and appreciate your support!

Encinal Avenue Update

Caltrans is making upgrades to Encinal Avenue in two phases. Phase 1 is taking place now, and involves traffic signal upgrades and electrical work. Pavement resurfacing and curb ramp upgrades to ADA-compliant standards are tentatively scheduled to begin in spring/summer 2023 when temperatures for pavement are suitable. We'll continue to share updates about this project as it moves along.

November 2022 Election

The nomination period for the November 8, 2022 election opens Monday, July 18. Candidates for Mayor and City Council must apply by August 12.

At its July 5 meeting, the Alameda City Council voted to place two items on the November 8, 2022 general election ballot. The first measure if approved by voters would allow the City Council to increase the salaries of the Mayor and Councilmembers from the current salaries of $3,600 per year for the Mayor and $1,200 per year for City Councilmembers to an amount not to exceed 30% of the median salary for all area occupations, which is currently around $26,000.

The second measure if approved by voters would increase the City's transient occupancy tax, which is paid by persons staying at local hotels, motels, and in short-term rentals, to 14%, the same rate as Oakland and San Leandro, to fund essential city services. Look out for more information about this measure being mailed next week.

City Manager Recruitment

The recruitment for City Manager is now open and is being advertised in a number of public sector publications. Interested candidates are encouraged to apply by August 19!

Federal Grant to Construct Phase 2 of Estuary Park

The Alameda Recreation and Park Department will receive a $2.5 million grant from the Federal Land and Water Conservation Fund to complete Phase 2 of Estuary Park in fall 2023. This 4-acre phase builds upon the first phase which includes a baseball/soccer field specifically designed for children and adults with developmental and physical disabilities.

This project expands amenities and will include a fully inclusive playground for children of all abilities to play together, a half basketball court, and Bankshot, a unique basketball hoop system designed for all ages and people with disabilities. Players shoot hoops alongside each other, not against each other, with stations that have individually challenging configurations of hoop backboards and heights.

This next phase will also include a new parking lot, restrooms, large and small group picnic areas, open grass turf play area, small and large dog park, plus four pickleball courts!
