Public Health Department Launches Innovative Violence Prevention Program to Examine Violence Through Public Health Lens.
The program aims to reduce violence related to hate, firearms, intimate partner violence, and youth suicide.
Alameda County Health’s Public Health Department (ACPHD) has launched a new program that aims to examine the root causes of violence, support community-based violence intervention efforts, and reshape local narratives around violence. In total, $5,739,806 in funding will be administered by community-based providers to support three major areas of work: violence intervention and prevention programming, youth suicide prevention activities, and nurturing the health and wellbeing of violence intervention professionals. Led by ACPHD’s Office of Violence Prevention (OVP), the multiyear effort is a collaboration with nearly 20 local nonprofit organizations, all dedicated to reducing violence related to hate, firearms, intimate partner violence, and youth suicide.
“I applaud the Public Health Department’s innovative approach to tackling violence in our county,” said Alameda County Board Supervisor Nate Miley. “By applying these trusted public health approaches that reduce violence in our communities, we are strengthening our commitment to ensure that Alameda County is a safe place to live, work, and play.”

Measure C - Children's Health and Child Care Initiative
|
Last month, the BOS approved the 2025-2030 Program Plan and Budget for Alameda County's Measure C. This is a monumental step forward, capping a decade of work to ensure children and families have access to high quality early education and childcare providers can early a living wage. This will authorize $209.5M in funding for childcare, preschool, and early education. This also authorized a fund release to First 5 Alameda County to administer this critical initiative. This is a huge step forward for early childhood support in Alameda County!
Measure W - Sales Tax Initiative
|
Alameda County's Measure W, a ballot measure that established a half percent sales tax for 10 years to provide essential County services, including housing and services for those experiencing homelessness, mental health services, job training, social safety net and other general fund services, passed in November of 2020. Lawsuits delayed Measure W, but as of May 2025, the Courts decided that the County can go ahead and spend these funds. The Measure W upcoming discussion (tentatively set for July 22) will include a recommendation to support a total of $4.5 million for countywide emergency food services, as well as $2 million to backfill funding for Area Agency on Aging community providers championed by the Senior Services Coalition of Alameda County. Alameda County 2025-2026 Budget Adoption |
|
 |
On June 26, the Board of Supervisors adopted Alameda County's fiscal year 2025-2026 budget. This $5.1B budget closes a $105M funding gap through spending reductions and revenue increases. The FY 25-26 budget makes critical investments to advance the goals articulated in the BOS Vision 2036, a framework designed to guide the county over the next decade. As the BOS assessed the impacts of state and federal budgets on county services, it gave the following policy directives - proposed criteria to guide the allocation of Measure W funds, recommendations to support $4.5M for emergency food services, $2M to backfill funds for the Senior Services Coalition community providers through the Area Gency on Aging, and streamlined the process to allocate the supplemental $5M ($1M each supervisory district) included in the budget for Enhancing Vision 2036 Fund administered by AC Health. The final budget also invests $585M to support the county's $2.9B in capital projects in the 5-year Capital Improvement Plan.
I'd like to thank our County Administrator, County Counsel, all Directors, and the budget team for their tireless efforts in putting forward a proposed budget that ensures a commitment to our essential services supported by over 10,000 county workers and 278 community-based organizations. I'm also thankful to all of the local residents who offered thoughtful dialogue during this critical process.

In Recognition of Alameda County Social Services Agency 50th Anniversary 2025
On June 3, 1975, the Alameda County Board of Supervisors established the Social Services Agency. The SSA is dedicated to promoting the economic and social well-being of individuals, families, neighborhoods, and communities throughout Alameda County. It serves as a cornerstone of support, providing essential services to over 500,000 individuals or one in three Alameda County residents, including access to safety net programs, such as General Assistance, CalWORKs, CalFresh, Medi-Cal, employment assistance, child welfare services, and support for seniors and individuals with disabilities.
