Down to Business with Supervisor Haubert

I recently visited and toured Bionova Scientific, guided by their knowledgeable COO, James Glover. Their parent company, Asahi Kasei, operates multiple locations in Fremont. Founded in 2014 by two biopharma veterans, Bionova was acquired by Asahi Kasei in 2022. As an extremely client-oriented organization, they adhere to the principles of Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP).
What does Bionova do? They are a Contract Development and Manufacturing Organization (CDMO) that offers comprehensive services, ranging from drug development to manufacturing, for pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies. During my visit, I observed viewing halls where clients can monitor their products without having to "gown up," which facilitates real-time oversight during research and testing. I saw bioreactors of various sizes used for testing cell growth conditions and stability, as well as labs dedicated to cell line development—an intricate and costly process. Additionally, the facility is equipped with state-of-the-art, smart, and time-saving equipment and supplies.
I thank James for the in-depth tour of this impressive and beneficial Fremont business. I look forward to my next tour of Fremont’s vibrant business community."
Alameda County Partners awarded $130.M to support treatment for people with significant behavioral health needs
Alameda County has been awarded $130.4M from the state's Department of Health Care Services (DHCS). These funds will support the mental health and substance treatment infrastructure around the county. The state will allocate funds directly to Alameda County partners and community-based providers to support the following projects:
- $14.8M to develop a Substance Use Disorder Detoxification (ASAM Level 3.7)
unit at San Leandro Hospital in San Leandro
- $62.4M to develop an Integrated Medical-Psychiatric Unit (MPU) at St. Rose
Hospital in Hayward
- $32M for Bay Area Community Servies (BAC) to develop an 83-bed Mental Health Rehabilitation Center (MHRC) in Hayward
- $21.2M for Horizon Services to develop the Telegraph Recovery Center, a 103-bed, state of the art, multi-level substance use treatment center in North Oakland.
These are important projects to bring to Alameda County residents and we're proud of the work of our community-based organizations and health care partners.
55 hr. Highway Closures On I-680 at the Mission San Jose (SR-238) Overpass in Fremont Weekends of July 11 & July 18, 2025
Alameda County – Caltrans is scheduled to close one direction of Interstate 680 at the I-680 and Mission San Jose (SR-238) Separation/Overpass in Fremont for two consecutive weekends to perform critical bridge and pavement work. Southbound I-680 will close the weekend of July 11, 2025, followed by Northbound I-680 the weekend of July 18, 2025.
These 55-hour closures are necessary to safely and efficiently complete key construction activities, including full bridge deck resurfacing and approach slab repairs. This phase of work involves heavy machinery and the resurfacing of the entire bridge deck. This work must be performed without live traffic to ensure worker and motorists safety. Concentrating these operations during weekend closures helps reduce the overall duration and impact of the project.
During these weekend closures, only one direction of travel on I-680 will be closed at a time with detours set in place. Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead and use alternative routes.
Please see here for more details.

June is Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month
Today, there are over 7 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s. The lifetime risk for the disease at age 45 is 1 in 5 for women and 1 in 10 for men. The brain changes that cause Alzheimer’s are thought to begin 20 years or more before symptoms start, which suggests that there may be a substantial window of time in which we can intervene in the progression of the disease.
During Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month, the Alzheimer’s Association invites everyone to join them in the fight to end Alzheimer’s and all other dementia. Here’s what you can do:
- Adopt the 10 Healthy Habits: It is never too early or too late to start taking positive actions for your brain. Visit alz.org/healthyhabits to learn more!
- Go purple: Throughout the month, go purple — the color of the Alzheimer’s movement — to raise awareness of the disease. Dress in purple and share your story on social media using the hashtag #ENDALZ.
- Volunteer: As an Alzheimer’s Association volunteer, you can help people in your community take steps to reduce their dementia risk and recognize the signs of Alzheimer’s. Visit alz.org/volunteer.
- Advocate: Learn how you can quickly and effectively use your voice to grow bipartisan support for Alzheimer’s and dementia policies.Visit alzimpact.org/actnow
- Accelerate research: Alzheimer’s Association TrialMatch® is a free, easy-to-use service that connects individuals living with Alzheimer's, caregivers and healthy volunteers to clinical trials that may advance Alzheimer's research. Visit alz.org/trialmatch.
