Supervisor's Message

d2 letterhead

Dear Community Partner,

The month of May was filled with celebrations, dialogue, and advocacy across Alameda County, especially in District 2!

From graduations to galas, I was honored to be in community with so many neighbors and fellow residents across District 2. It is a reminder of why I am proud to call Alameda County home and why I am dedicated to promoting access, inclusion, and support through public service.

Avanzando Graduation

Photo caption: As a daughter of an immigrant family, I am passionate about supporting first generation college students. This year, I awarded $10,000 to Avanzando to support their scholarship fund for Newark Unified graduates as they become the next generation of community leaders!

Non-profit organizations are essential partners with local government to achieve that shared vision. I want to express my sincere appreciation for two Alameda County non-profits that turned 40 years-old this year:

The Center for Elders Independence (CEI), who honored me with the 2025 Government Service Award during this Older Americans Month. From my experience as an older adult direct service provider to becoming a respite caregiver for my family’s elders, I know we can and must strengthen the county safety net to support healthy and dignified aging-in-place for all.

Senior Services Coalition Keynote

Photo caption:  Earlier this year, I had the opportunity to partner with the Senior Services Coalition of Alameda County to discuss how we must work together to “Make the Difference” for elders in our county and beyond. Check out the conversation here.

East Bay Housing Organizations (EBHO), who awarded me with the “Affordable Housing Hero” award this month!   Last year, my office awarded over a quarter million dollars in community grants to increase shelter resources and case management to help disrupt the cycle of homelessness. I will continue to advocate for policies and resources that increase housing security in our region, including protections for renters and other vulnerable populations such as children, seniors, people with disabilities and their caregivers.

EBHO Event

Photo caption: I look forward to continuing to collaborate with EBHO partners across the Bay Area to increase awareness, education, and access to affordable housing options for all residents. Join us in speaking up for the “3Ps” strategy: Produce, Preserve and Protect housing for all!

From the Board of Supervisors Chambers, we also celebrated Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Month – a time in May when we honor the legacy, resilience, and cultural contributions of AANHPI communities in Alameda County and across the nation. This year, I was proud to recognize Chabot-Las Positas Community College Trustee Harris Mojadedi for his unwavering commitment and compassion in advocating for AANHPI communities, creating meaningful pathways for refugee and immigrant populations to thrive.

Harris Mojadedi Commendation

Trustee Mojadedi is the proud son of Afghan refugees who came to the United States in search of a better life. Born in Fremont and raised in Union City, Trustee Mojadedi is deeply rooted in the District 2 community that shaped him. Learn more about his dedication to public service and community leadership here!

Looking towards the start of summer, there will be several important policy discussions that I hope you will engage with, including the Alameda County budget process and those at the Public Protection Committee which I chair.

Joint Health and PPC Meeting

Photo caption: This May, the Public Protection Committee held two special meetings with the Board of Supervisors Health Committee to receive updates and recommendations about critical county policies and programs, specifically health care at Santa Rita Jail, the implementation of the Care First, Jails Last taskforce recommendations, and CARE Court. Thank you to each of our presenters and audience participants for your contributions; committee materials and recordings are posted at: bos.acgov.org/committee-meetings

Your experience, community perspective, and most importantly: your voice matters. At the District 2 Office, we believe in a “Connect, Engage, Serve” approach to public service.

From sharing your experience with county programs and services to participating in upcoming board discussions such as the implementation of voter-approved funding for childcare (Measure C) and housing (Measure W), please know that my team and I are here to learn and partner with you.
