Representatives of media outlets from around the world joined to learn about the Global Artisan Vintners Alliance; a partnership of 9 co-founding wine regions that came together to share industry best practices and emerging and sustainable winemaking methods, as well as marketing and agritourism initiatives; and to elevate the global presence of each participating wine region.

Recognizing Serena Chen
Serena Chen is a longtime community and public health advocate in Alameda County. She began organizing in high school, later co-founding community action groups in Oakland Chinatown while at UC Berkeley. She helped establish Asian Health Services and advocated for affordable housing and cultural resources in Chinatown. With a master’s in social welfare, she worked in mental health services before transitioning to journalism, reporting on Asian American issues for KTVU and East West Chinese American News.
Chen later joined Alameda County’s Tobacco Control Program, spending 23 years advancing smoke-free policies and earning the Jefferson Award for her work. She has consulted on alcohol and cannabis policy and served on advisory boards for state health initiatives. Currently, she is a senior policy advisor for Supervisor Lena Tam, focusing on health and social services, and plays a key role in the Asian Pacific American Democratic Caucus of Alameda County. This Women’s History Month, we honor Serena Chen for her lifelong dedication to public health, advocacy, and community empowerment.
25th Anniversary Hindu Community & Cultural Center Grant-In-Aid Program
Supervisor Haubert is happy to announce the award of a Commendation to the Hindu Community & Cultural Center at their annual Grant-In-Aid Program on Saturday, March 1. The Alameda County Board of Supervisors greatly values the many years of community service provided by the HCCC.
The HCCC at Shiva-Vishnu Temple, 1232 Arrowhead Ave., Livermore, awarded 43 grants to local and global non-profits. Local non-profit recipients included the City of Livermore Police and Fire Departments, Livermore Valley Unified School District programs, Culinary Angels, Goodness Village, Little Miracles, Open Heart Kitchen, Partners for Change Tri-Valley, Sunflower Hill, Tri-Valley Bus Program, and Valley View Elementary School (Pleasanton Unified School District).
The HCCC Human Services Committee was established in 1987 with the mission of “serving the community at large by making a difference in the life of people”. Some of their other local on-going programs are: an annual health fair, senior picnics, lectures on health issues and personal safety, Covid and flu vaccines, blood and bone marrow drives, kidney and dental screening.
We are very pleased to have the presence and work of the HCCC in our Alameda County District 1!

A Message From CAIR
CAIR-SFBA is working to ensure that Muslim students, workers, and incarcerated individuals receive the accommodations they need to observe the month of Ramadan without hardship. This is a message from CAIR:
|
Each year, we hear from students struggling with demanding schedules during Ramadan, workers whose accommodation requests are ignored, and incarcerated individuals denied the ability to fast or access halal meals. By engaging schools, workplaces, and correctional facilities ahead of time, we aim to prevent these challenges before they arise and ensure institutions are prepared to respect the rights of Muslim students, employees, and inmates.
How to Request Accommodations
To make it easier to request accommodations at work or school, CAIR-CA has created downloadable letter templates.
|
|
|
Thanks to CAIR-CA and the community's advocacy, two key California state laws help protect Muslim students during Ramadan:
- AB 2377 (“P.E. Bill”) – Allows K-12 students to be excused from physical activity while fasting, upon written notification, without losing physical education (P.E.) credit.
- AB 1503 – Amends the Education Code to allow students to take one full day (eight hours) per semester off for religious holidays like Eid, without academic penalty.
These laws help ensure that students can observe Ramadan without added stress or discrimination.

Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA)
There are currently 1,100 youth ages 0 until 21 in the Alameda County child welfare system. Alameda County CASA (ACCASA) pairs volunteers 1:1 with youth in foster care. After comprehensive, free training to become skilled advocates for children, often a CASA is the only stable and reliable adult in a child’s life. At this time ACCASA can only support 25% of those eligible.
ACCASA wants to increase the percentage of children with an advocate, with a commitment to diversifying its volunteer base to better reflect the communities served. CASAs advocate, report, research resources, mentor, and often have a lot of fun in the process of building a strong bond with their assigned youth. Please consider finding some time in your heart and schedule for a young person in foster care. Learn More about Volunteering at CASA.
Serra Center
The Serra Center was established in 1975 by the National Benevolent Association. 24 hour care and nursing services are provided in Serra Center's three intermediate care facilities. Supported Living Services are provided, which are designed to help individuals to work towards long term goals while exercising meaningful choice and control in their daily lives.
Serra Center clients enjoy many programs that make a difference for them. They enjoy art classes, our annual awareness walk and day programs offered by the Fremont Unified School District. These programs are highlights for our clients.
Our office is thrilled to have presented Serra Center with a grant to enhance the programs, develop additional opportunities for our and recruit more qualified caregivers.
