Dear District 3 Community,
February is an exciting month, rich in cultural diversity and expressions of love. During this time, we eagerly anticipate engaging in meaningful celebrations that highlight our shared heritage. February not only commemorates Black History Month but also brings vibrant festivities surrounding Lunar New Year, the warmth of Valentine's Day, and the recognition of Presidents' Day.
This month, we take a moment to honor the extraordinary achievements and heritage of the African American and Black community, acknowledging the invaluable contributions that have shaped our collective history. At the same time, we celebrate the joy and significance of Lunar New Year, observed across various Asian countries, symbolizing renewal, prosperity, and family unity. These celebrations also extend to Valentine's Day, a universal tribute to love and connection, as well as Presidents' Day, recognizing leadership throughout history.
As we eagerly anticipate these events, let us come together to ensure they authentically reflect the diversity and unity that define our community. Check social media for more details on the upcoming celebrations!

Supervisor Nikki Fortunato Bas was sworn in as the newest Supervisor in January, taking over from Supervisor Keith Carson. Prior to this role, she served on the Oakland City Council from 2019 to 2024. District 5 encompasses Albany, Berkeley, Emeryville, Piedmont, West Oakland, North Oakland, Rockridge, Grand Lake, as well as parts of the Fruitvale, Manzanita, and Dimond District neighborhoods. Congratulations Supervisor Fortunato Bas!
On January 14, 2025, the Alameda County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved the sale of its ownership stake in the Oakland Coliseum to a local development group. This pivotal decision sets the stage for a bold transformation of the iconic site. The development group plans to revamp the Coliseum with a blend of affordable housing, commercial spaces, and upgraded recreational facilities. The project is expected to shape Oakland’s future and bring significant benefits to the broader Alameda County community.

At our January 28, 2025, Board meeting, we were pleased to appoint Ursula Jones Dickson as the new District Attorney for Alameda County. Currently serving as a Superior Court Judge, Ms. Jones Dickson brings valuable experience, having previously worked as a Deputy District Attorney. I’m confident that she will play a key role in rebuilding trust within our community, ensuring fair and just outcomes, and advancing our efforts toward criminal justice reform. I look forward to collaborating with her and strengthening partnerships with County leaders, law enforcement, and the community. Thank you to all who participated in the selection process.

This summer, construction will begin on the Oakland Alameda Access Project, which aims to make travel safer and improve bike and pedestrian access in Alameda and Oakland. The project will take place in the Webster and Posey Tubes and Oakland’s Chinatown. Construction will include a redesigned I-880 onramp to eliminate the series of right turns that Alamedans currently must take to access the freeway from the Posey Tube.
Once completed, community members can look forward to safer streets, reduced traffic congestion, new high-quality bike lanes and sidewalks, improvements to meet ADA accessibility standards, and better air quality through fewer vehicle emissions and greenhouse gases.
What’s next: The Alameda County Transportation Commission (Alameda CTC) and Caltrans are leading the project and working to minimize traffic delays during construction. The work is expected to continue from this summer through fall 2028. Here’s what you need to know about closures:
- With a few exceptions, at least one lane in both Tubes will remain open throughout the project.
- During the first six months of construction, one lane in the Webster Tube will be closed, while the other lane will remain open. The Posey Tube will remain open with two lanes during this time.
- Once construction in the Webster Tube is completed, both lanes will reopen. The Posey Tube will be reduced to one lane for approximately one year.
- Full late-night closures for each Tube may occur when fewer cars are using them. These closures will be coordinated to ensure at least one Tube remains open at all times. Dates and times will be determined in partnership with Alameda and Oakland city staff, as well as community input.
More details about the project timeline and closures will be provided once a contractor is selected this spring. Stay tuned for information about upcoming Open Houses hosted by Alameda CTC and partners like the City of Alameda. Dates and times will be shared here once confirmed. For questions, please email oaapcommunications@alamedactc.org.
Enforcement began on January 1, 2025.
The new law prohibits stopping, standing, or parking a vehicle within 20 feet of the approach side of any unmarked or marked crosswalk, or within 15 feet of any crosswalk where a curb extension is present. The law is designed to improve visibility for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians, a practice known as “daylighting.” Daylighting reduces the risk of severe collisions and enhances safety.
