District 4 Newsletter | Summer Edition
|
|
Hello District 4! I hope everyone is enjoying the warmer summer months!
As many things are happening in D4, please read on for lots of information. First, I'd like to recognize that June is Pride Month, a time to recognize and support the contributions of the LGBTQ+ community. We should all embrace the diversity and inclusion we hold dear.
An upcoming event I'd like to highlight is the Healthy Living Festival that is coming up in September. It's an event for seniors and is held at the Oakland Zoo.
Also included in this newsletter is information about our Board and Commissions. If you are looking for a way to get involved, this is the perfect opportunity. The list includes all of the openings in our district with a link that takes you to the application page.
I'm always interested in what constituents have to say so please feel free to reach out to any of our offices with your questions or concerns. Thank you for the opportunity to serve the county and have a fun, safe, and relaxing summer!
PS - I hope you all get to visit the Alameda County Fair which is going on now until July 7!

From May 2-3, in partnership with the Illegal Dumping Task Force, I hosted the 4th Annual Statewide Conference on Illegal Dumping to elevate and disseminate best practices for addressing illegal dumping throughout the State of California. The theme, "Best Practices to End Illegal Dumping," emphasized cross-sector collaboration and The Three E's Strategy (Education, Eradication, Enforcement) for all communities. The Conference was a hybrid event, with in-person activities in downtown Oakland and also available online via Zoom. Each day featured presentations from experts in the field at the state, county and local level--sharing their valuable insights and strategies. For more information check out the county website.

Adequate housing is crucial for a healthy life, yet it's not always accessible. To address this, the Bay Area Housing Finance Authority (BAHFA) has placed a bond measure on the November ballot, aiming to raise $20 billion for affordable housing projects across the Bay Area. With the passage of this Regional Housing Bond, Alameda County will receive $2 billion, plus another $765 million for affordable housing projects in Oakland.
Housing bonds have a proven track record in Alameda County. In 2016, I championed Measure A-1, a General Obligation Bond, and set a goal of creating and preserving 3,800 homes in our county. The new Regional Housing Bond would more than triple that investment and extend these efforts to all nine Bay Area counties. As a member of BAHFA, which operates under the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) and the Association of Bay Area Governments (ABAG), I am proud to support and champion this measure in Alameda County.
To raise awareness and foster discussion about affordable housing and the upcoming bond measure, I am hosting an informational summit on September 19th. I invite you to join community members and local leaders to learn more and engage in this important conversation.
I look forward to seeing you there and working together towards a future where everyone in Alameda County has access to the essential resources they need and deserve.

On the week of May 23rd, The Alameda CTC approved $11.5 million in grants to 14 nonprofit organizations and government agencies for paratransit programs serving older adults and people with disabilities. Funded by 2014 voter-approved Measure BB transportation sales tax, these grants will enhance access to services, coordinate existing programs and address transportation gaps. The funding distributed over five years, starting in the 2024-2025 fiscal year will support travel training, volunteer drive programs, wheelchair accessible transportation and more. This initiative ensures vital transportation services for our community's most vulnerable members. |
