Dear District 3 Community,
May brought many opportunities for celebration, allowing us to honor the contributions and diversity of Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders cultures. Through solidarity and a commitment to uplifting each other, we ensure inclusivity and opportunity for all. June is a month dedicated to celebrating Pride Month for the LGBTQ+ community and Juneteenth for the African American community.
Looking ahead, we are excited to celebrate the San Leandro Cherry Festival, Pride Flag Raising, Women Veterans Recognition Day, Alameda County Sheriff's Office Summer Citizens Academy, Alameda County Fair, Oakland Town Nights, Port of Oakland Harbor Tour, Juneteenth celebrations, a film festival, the unveiling of the Black Veterans Historical Corridor in Oakland, a health fair, summer nights, and more. Most importantly, we also celebrate the achievements of graduates in May and June.
My team will be at the San Leandro Cherry Parade and Festival. Join us for a day of music, food, and fun! Dance to Funk, R&B, and Latin rhythms on the Main Stage, explore unique creations from local artists, taste fresh cherries at the Cherry Market, and enjoy beverages.
The San Leandro Cherry Festival, a cherished tradition since 1909, celebrates the community's past, present, and future. Despite changes over the years, the festival continues to foster a strong sense of community identity and pride. Come be a part of this vibrant celebration!
We invite you to join the District 3 staff at the Oakland AAPI and African American Solidarity Walk this Tuesday, June 4, 2024. This event promotes unity and support for both the AAPI and African American communities. Your presence will help strengthen community bonds and amplify our shared commitment to social justice and equality.

The County of Alameda Board of Supervisors proclaimed May 2024 as Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. This year's theme, "Bridging Histories, Shaping Our Future," honors AANHPI ancestors and encourages us to celebrate diversity, culture, and build bridges for a brighter tomorrow. Let's forge intergenerational connections to honor our past and pave a durable path forward.
This year, District 3 recognized Gilbert Gong, who continuously sought to build bridges between generations by implementing programs that bring residents of all ages together, from preschoolers, youth, parents, to elders, in an environment of mutual respect, learning, and appreciation.
My team joined the Oakland Athletics' AAPI Heritage Night, featuring Asian Health Services. Asian Health Services' Family Nurse Practitioner, Gina Nguyen, threw the first pitch, and Chief Executive Officer Julia Liou was interviewed on the Jumbotron. Alameda County AAPI elected officials, including East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) Director April Chan, City of San Leandro Councilmember Xouhoa Bowen, and former City of Alameda Councilmember Stewart Chen joined us. San Leandro Councilmember Bryan Azevedo also attended and brought AAPI San Leandro City Boards and Commissions Members for the Los Angeles Angels vs. Oakland A's game.
Congratulations to the new Alameda County Women's Hall of Fame inductees and the four inaugural scholarship recipients of the Mary V. King/Wilma Chan Youth Scholarship Fund! Your achievements and contributions have made a lasting impact, and your legacy of excellence inspires us all.
The Alameda County Veterans Affairs Commission, in partnership with Swords to Plowshares, hosted a Stand Down for Veterans at Laney College. The event provided crucial resources for unhoused veterans and students, including shower access in the gymnasium locker rooms, continental breakfast, and lunch. Attendees accessed services related to housing, healthcare, mental wellness, employment, legal aid, justice involvement, life and social services, and more.

My team had an amazing time at the Oakland Multicultural Chamber's Annual Mixer. It was a fantastic evening of networking and celebrating Oakland's diverse business community and its contributions to The Town. We heard inspiring talks from chamber and local leaders and learned about UCSF's future investments in Oakland. The event featured delicious food and drinks from local vendors, and we had a great time reconnecting with old friends and making new connections.
|
My team attended the grand opening of the American Red Cross Northern California Coastal Region in San Leandro. Their reach spans five chapters, serving over 10 million people across 15 counties. The recent relocation of their biomedical and humanitarian services to San Leandro is a big milestone. They provide 24/7 disaster assistance, blood services, military support, first aid training, and global crisis response. We are proud to support their ongoing efforts in our communities.

My team celebrated at the 9th Annual Older Americans Month Luncheon. It was an honor to meet inspiring nonagenarians and centenarians like Jean Johnson, Johnnie Walker, and Betty Hicks. They redefine aging with grace and vitality.
Watch the recording of the impactful play "A CRITICAL TIME" by Dr. Cindy Acker, Ed.D., marking the 70th anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education. Supreme Court Justice Earl Warren's historic unanimous decision reshaped desegregation. "Words That Made the Difference" revisits this legacy amid ongoing covert segregation. Presented as part of the Barbara Lee and Elihu Harris Lecture Series, it prompts civic leaders to address Dr. King’s query: “Where do we go from here: chaos or community?” This resonates deeply in our era, emphasizing the urgency of confronting lingering segregation issues. For more information, please visit here.
The recording is available here.
