“They say it takes a village to raise a child; it takes a village to raise a community leader. As we all know, we can’t do this work alone.”
It is hard to believe that just one year ago, I was sharing this message in front of a sea of community leaders, each witnessing one of the most significant moments of my life, as we gathered at Newark City Hall for my swearing-in ceremony as Alameda County’s newest Supervisor.
 An unforgettable moment of gratitude for the broad range of community support received to serve and uplift our district’s experience on the Alameda County Board of Supervisors.
Each day since then and with the vision of the late Supervisor Valle to guide me, I have had the opportunity to connect with the many community-service driven residents of Hayward, Newark, Union City, and Fremont neighborhoods encompassed by District 2.
This April truly came full circle for me as a lifelong resident of South Hayward where I was thrilled to present a District 2 grant award of $150,000 to Covenant House to establish Hayward’s *first* Transitional Age Youth (TAY) shelter. Every community member, especially young people, should have access to housing support and other critical safety-net support services.
 Fun Fact: The location chosen for Hayward’s first Transitional Age Youth shelter holds a very special connection for me: it is the very same spot where I attended Shepherd Elementary School back in 1986!
April also represents the time of the year when the Board of Supervisors begins to review the state of the County budget as we approach the new fiscal year (July 2024 – June 2025). On April 9th, departmental leaders presented a preliminary fiscal outlook and its potential impacts on county services and residents.  Almost two-thirds of Alameda County’s budget comes from state and federal revenue to support the safety-net. Last year, I was proud to sponsor an adopted budget letter with Board President Nate Miley to provide $7 million for St. Rose Hospital’s operations in alignment with the County’s Vision 2026 goal of “Health Care For All”. https://vision2026.acgov.org/our-goals/
Looking ahead, I continue to mobilize regional leaders to ensure St. Rose Hospital – southern Alameda County’s *only* safety-net hospital with emergency and maternity ward services – continues to provide vital health care while developing a long-term sustainability plan.
 City-County partnership is essential for safeguarding the health of our community. Thank you to Newark Mayor Mike Hannon, Union City Mayor Carol Dutra Vernaci, and Hayward Mayor Mark Salinas for collaborating with my office to support St. Rose Hospital’s sustainability plan to ensure health care for all in southern Alameda County. Thank you to Assemblymember Liz Ortega for sponsoring Assembly Bill 2271, which aims to forgive St. Rose Hospital’s state loans and create a pathway for this essential non-profit community hospital to seek affiliation with Alameda Health System, an integrated care public health care system. I also want to applaud District 2 leaders, City of Hayward Mayor Mark Salinas, Newark Mayor Michael Hannon, Union City Mayor Carol Dutra-Vernaci, and the Hayward Chamber of Commerce, for coordinating with my office to submit letters of support for this urgent legislation that unanimously passed out of state Assembly Health Committee last week.
So, whether it’s lifting a binder for the next board meeting or a shovel to break new project ground, my commitment has and will continue to be to connect, engage, and serve the residents of District 2 and surrounding region more broadly.
 Together, we can both lift those who have lifted us as well as support and strengthen “the village”.

 Housing Authority of the County of Alameda (HACA) is extending its April 2024 waitlist opening for one day ONLY on May 6, 2024, from 8:00am - 8:00pm. If you applied during the April waitlist opening, you do not need to take any action. All applications received in the previous April 2024 opening and this one-day opening will be entered into the lottery.
HACA will be accepting online applications for our HCV (Section 8) program and HACA-owned Project based (PBV), 3- and 4-bedroom units in Emeryville and Union City for families with very low-income (VLI) and extremely low-income (ELI). Section 8 provides rental assistance to eligible low-income families in a unit of their choosing. PBV provides this rental assistance in units owned by HACA.  Applications are now being accepted for the lottery waitlist for Fremont Family Apartments, a new affordable housing property located at 34320 Fremont Boulevard in Fremont. This new property is for income-eligible individuals and families and will be managed by Abode and The John Stewart Company.
At this time, applications are being accepted for 27 rental units at Fremont Family Apartments. Applications can be submitted online via the Alameda County Housing Portal. The deadline to apply is Friday, May 3, 2024 at 5:00 p.m. Applications can be submitted any time before the deadline; it is not first come, first served.
Fremont Family Apartments includes a total of 54 brand new affordable rental units to be leased to low-income individuals and families. Features include 1-bedroom, 2-bedroom, and 3-bedroom floor plans and an on-site manager and resident services.

 The Mental Health Services Act Division of Alameda County Behavioral Health Department invites the public to review and comment on the Alameda County Behavioral Health Department MHSA Plan Update Fiscal Year 24/25.
The public comment and review period will end Sunday, May 15, 2024. The Mental Health Advisory Board will host a public hearing on Monday, May 20, 2024.

Readers donate used books; let's make some of them into small book sculptures.
What do you need to participate in this event?
- An interest in learning how to fold book pages to make a word, an object, or a geometrical figure
- Be a teen or an adult (upper elementary or middle school children could participate if accompanied by an adult)
The library will provide used books for folding and teach you how to do it. No previous skills or experience are needed.

Although Earth Day has passed, there's still one simple way to divert waste from landfills: the Mattress Recycling Council’s (MRC) Bye Bye Mattress program.
More than 75% of a mattress can be recycled. The steel, foam, fibers and wood are turned into everyday products like carpet padding, industrial filters, construction rebar and garden mulch. MRC’s program recycles foam and inner-spring mattresses, futon mattresses that can separate from the futon frame or base, as well as box springs.
