ORDINANCE PROHIBITING SMOKING IN MULTI-FAMILY DWELLINGS

On January 11, 2022, the Alameda County Board of Supervisors unanimously passed an ordinance prohibiting smoking in multi-unit residences located in the County’s Urban Unincorporated Areas. The result of three years of discussion and community advocacy, the ordinance is designed to reduce the negative impacts of secondhand smoke while addressing health inequities among vulnerable County residents. This action -- which I was proud to help champion -- represents a collaboration between advocates, community members, health experts and property owners and is one step closer to cleaner air in our homes.

The ordinance will take effect on July 1, 2022.

A copy of the full ordinance can be found at: www.acgov.org

ADDRESSING NEEDED REFORMS TO CANNABIS TAXES

On January 25, 2022, the Board of Supervisors urged the State of California to address the complex and burdensome taxes imposed on legal cannabis operators. These state taxes and fees make cannabis one of the most heavily regulated industries and are driving out legal operators in support of illegal growers.

I was proud to request that the Board of Supervisors join the City of Oakland's opposition to these taxes which deter legal industry.

SUPERVISOR MILEY'S MESSAGE REGARDING COVID

March will mark the second anniversary of the start of the COVID-19 pandemic within Alameda County. Over the last two years, nearly 240,000 residents have been infected with this virus and thousands have lost loved ones.

We've seen the community rally together with neighbors helping neighbors. I've spoken with constituents that needed assistance grocery shopping, accessing a warm meal, or navigating new technologies like Zoom. I've talked with parents and grandparents that needed assistance from their families to access registration platforms for COVID testing and vaccinations. My staff and I have helped distribute protective equipment and resources at numerous community events to ensure the safety of those most at risk.

To date, nearly 6 million tests have been administered and with the help of community organizations, we've provided about 3.5 million doses of life saving vaccines to fight COVID-19.

The year ahead is sure to further challenge and strain our communities, especially those that are black, indigenous and people of color, as well as our businesses, tenants, landlords, non profits, services providers, healthcare workers, educators, parents, students and more. Each of us, collectively, will continue to experience the impact of COVID-19, but let us not forget that we are collectively in this fight. Encourage your family, friends, neighbors and colleagues to get vaccinated, tested and boosted.

UPDATE ON REDISTRICTING

The 2021 Redistricting Process engaged hundred of residents, many of which spoke at public meetings and even created their own draft maps. On December 7, 2021, the Board of Supervisors adopted the final draft map, outlining new district boundaries for each of the five Supervisorial Districts. District 4 now covers the entirety of Ashland within the Unincorporated Area while the City of Pleasanton is now represented by Districts 1 and 4 (with District 4 serving the areas near Stoneridge, Amador Valley, Bernal and Main Street). The City of Oakland continues to be served by Districts 3, 4 and 5, with District 4 representing many of the same communities within East Oakland and the Oakland Hills.

This was an important moment in our County's recent history. The new district lines determine political representation, allocation of resources, and how community interests may manifest. Learn more about how the map came to be on the County's dedicated redistricting website.

Below is the final draft map:

EXERCISE YOUR RIGHT TO BE HEARD!

BOS

Most Tuesdays, the Board of Supervisors holds a Regular Meeting during which the public is allowed to speak to the Board on agenda items representing decisions made about our communities.

While we might not always agree on the best path forward, I am fond of saying that reasonable people will disagree, and that I get some of my best ideas from my constituency base. I am honored to serve on the Board as a County Supervisor and take the ideas, concerns, and feedback of the public very seriously.

Please consider tuning into these meeting and encouraging your family, friends, and neighbors to do the same. We are stronger as a County when we are connected to one another, and engaged with the civic process.

The meeting calendar, including links to the agenda when it is available, can be found here.

The links to the livestream broadcast of the meetings can be found here.
