An Update from Health Care Services: As of April 23, 2021

COVID-19 Vaccine Update

As of April 20, more than 1,255,000 COVID-19 vaccine doses have been administered to Alameda County residents. More than 823,000 residents are fully vaccinated which means that just over 38% of our residents' age 16+ are fully vaccinated.

Find a COVID-19 vaccine near you. Alameda County residents can find a vaccine site using the new interactive map on our website. Enter the preferred zip code to view multiple locations including information about eligibility, appointment status, and how to register. Use our new vaccine registration link to schedule an appointment. If you are unable to get an appointment through Alameda County and you have a health care provider, please ask if they have appointments available for you.

The pandemic is not over. COVID-19 is in our community and more than 60% of our residents' age 16+ are fully vaccinated. As we build community immunity, please continue COVID-19 precautions to avoid severe illness, hospitalization, and death. It's also important to keep masking even after vaxxing.

Fully vaccinated? CDPH recently posted recommendations for the fully vaccinated including what you can and should continue to do.

You'll find information on COVID-19 variants, breakthrough infections, vaccine supply, and guidance after vaccination in this week's update to our Board of Supervisors.

California's Set to Fully Open June 15

Governor Newsom recently announced that California will fully open its economy if two criteria are met:

  1. Vaccine supply is sufficient for Californians 16 years and older who wish to be inoculated, and
  2. Hospitalization rates are stable and low, especially among vaccinated individuals.

Our current daily case rates keep us in the Orange Tier of the state's blueprint. As we head toward June, we must stay vigilant against COVID-19 and variants emerging across the Bay Area while vaccine shortages remain. Our focus remains on our priority neighborhoods and ensuring vaccine access to residents disproportionately affected by COVID-19.

I have one word to describe the past three days: WOW!

Another Successful Community Clean Up

Check out the photos from last week's community clean up at Pearmain and Douglas in East Oakland! Just in time to highlight the urgent need to end illegal dumping that my Statewide Illegal Dumping Conference covered for 3 days this past week - is the spirit of the mission in action!

We removed just over 8 tons of garbage!

Participants included staff from my office, the District Attorney Nancy O'Malley's office, Alameda County Sheriff's Office, local business partners AB&I Foundry and Argent Materials, members of the Beautification Council including Ken Houston, Good Hope Church members, and volunteers from our  local community.

We regularly engage with our community as part of my "Three E's" approach to end illegal dumping, so we spoke with the property owners around Douglas to understand their perspective on the problem. We gathered feedback about how to best prevent dumps and also steps proposed to address unsheltered community members nearby.

As a result, we're looking into housing options for 5-6 people currently living on the street, and then putting up a fence and cameras to monitor illegal dumping activity. We also made several business contacts in the area, including two with existing cameras on their properties that cover the street, and connected them with the Alameda County DA's office.

These clean ups are more than temporary fixes to an unending problem. We go further by engaging the community and also ensuring there are consequences to dumping trash and debris on our streets. Together, we really can make a difference that lasts - stay tuned for the next clean up opportunity and come join us! Learn more about my pilot program here.

Exercise Your Right to Be Heard!

BOS 2021

Most Tuesdays, the Board of Supervisors holds a Regular Meeting during which the public is allowed to speak to the Board on items not on the agenda starting at or around 9:30am for the time being. (Please note that the BOS meetings do not start at a set time! More information appears closer to the meeting date and time, but be prepared to wait for it to begin.)

Agenda items in particular represent decisions made about our communities, and while we might not always agree on the best path forward, I am fond of saying that reasonable people will disagree and also that I get some of my best ideas from my constituency base. I am honored to serve on the Board as a County Supervisor and take the ideas, concerns, and feedback of the public very seriously.

Please, consider tuning into these meeting and encouraging your family, friends, and neighbors to do the same. We are stronger as a County when we are connected to one another, and engaged with the civic process.

The meeting calendar, including links to the agenda when it is available, can be found here.

The links to the livestream broadcast of the meetings, including a Zoom link in the event that Granicus is experiencing technical difficulties, can be found here.
