News and Ideas for Thriving Communities

What's Next for ALL IN?

On June 27, 2017, ALL IN became an initiative of the Board of Supervisors. This vote establishes ALL IN within the governance framework of the Board of Supervisors and their committees.

We also welcome Supervisor Nate Miley to the Steering Committee, who will join Supervisor Wilma Chan in leading the initiative.

Community Partner Spotlight

Resources for Community Development (RCD) is an affordable housing developer that owns more than 2,100 rental housing units throughout Alameda and Solano Counties, with 428 of those dedicated specifically to homeless or formerly homeless individuals and families.

Last year, RCD launched its Stronger Places, Stronger Lives community development initiative. The initiative builds on the housing that RCD already has in communities throughout the county to organize residents around the many intersecting needs of low-income families. For example, in the Ashland community, RCD has a long-term plan to work with community members to increase access to healthy foods, family resources, and jobs. This strategy involves both co-locating a café and market place in Ashland Place, RCD's local affordable housing development, that will allow four local entrepreneurs to launch food businesses, as well as training and mobilizing residents to advocate for their families and improving the community’s quality of life.

The work is an example of RCD's inclusive approach to community development. Breann Gala, the community development initiative manager for RCD, says built environment, health and food access and housing all play a role in building strong communities. She said, "Part of the reason we've been successful is that we've really tried to work across these silos; we've been intentional about centering community voices in shaping the future of their community.  The ALL IN Alameda County grant for last year’s listening sessions aligned perfectly with our efforts to listen and engage the community in defining issues and working toward solutions that build a stronger Ashland. ALL IN Initiative Update

During the winter of 2016 and the spring of 2017, ALL IN held a second year of community listening sessions and began implementation phases for all of our food security initiatives.

May 2017: ALL IN was selected as a recipient for Nickels for Non-Profits donations at Whole Foods Market. Participation in this program raised over $6,000 for our programs.

Jan. 2017: Over 100 people attended the Listening Sessions Grantee poster session, in which grantees created posters and gave presentations on their findings to community residents and local elected officials.

Dec. 2016: ALL IN worked with Satellite Affordable Housing Associates (SAHA) and to launch Berkeley food recovery pilot at three SAHA sites. These pilots allow residents to "shop" every month for free produce, grains, and other healthy food staples.

Oct. 2016: The Alameda County Social Services Agency sent out 20,000 pre-populated CalFresh applications with Medi-Cal renewal applications in an effort to increase CalFresh enrollment.
