Community Partner Spotlight
Resources for Community Development (RCD) is an affordable
housing developer that owns more than 2,100 rental housing units throughout
Alameda and Solano Counties, with 428 of those dedicated specifically to
homeless or formerly homeless individuals and families.
Last year, RCD launched its Stronger Places, Stronger Lives
community development initiative. The initiative builds on the housing that RCD
already has in communities throughout the county to organize residents around the
many intersecting needs of low-income families. For example, in the Ashland
community, RCD has a long-term plan to work with community members to increase
access to healthy foods, family resources, and jobs. This strategy involves
both co-locating a café and market place in Ashland Place, RCD's local
affordable housing development, that will allow four local entrepreneurs to
launch food businesses, as well as training and mobilizing residents to
advocate for their families and improving the community’s quality of life.
The work is an example of RCD'sinclusive
approach to community development. Breann Gala, the community development initiative
manager for RCD, says built environment, health and food access and housing all
play a role in building strong communities. She said, "Part of the reason
we've been successful is that we've really tried to work across these silos;
we've been intentional about centering community voices in shaping the future of their community. The ALL IN Alameda County grant for last
year’s listening sessions aligned perfectly with our efforts to listen and
engage the community in defining issues and working toward solutions that build
a stronger Ashland. "
