A two-part class designed for non-attorneys, paralegals and paralegal
students and any others who want to learn more about legal research.

PART 1 includes an overview of the types of books and
online resources in the library and how they can be used by the
researcher, differences between primary and secondary resources, the
most effective way to begin your research and a tour of the main floor
of the library. We'll do a sample research questions to show how to
approach your own research. A tour of the library to show where the
materials are will be part of the class.
PART 2 is held on September 27 and includes a quick
refresher on what was discussed earlier and actual experience doing
research. A simple worksheet will be used to help you find out more
about legal resources. The final 20 minutes will be done using some of
our online resources. Please bring your laptop, if you have one for this
part of the class. A limited number of library laptops will also be
available.

York, and Southern California.
Kim Burgess has been practicing law in Alameda county

From accessible websites to usable mobile apps, from federal
regulations to federal lawsuits to comprehensive settlements, lawyers in

About the Speaker: Lainey Feingold is a disability
rights lawyer in Berkeley, CA who represents the blind community on
digital and technology access issues. Along with Oakland civil rights
lawyer Linda Dardarian, she has pioneered the alternative dispute
resolution method known as Structured Negotiation - a process focused on
win-win claims resolutions without lawsuits. Her book, Structured
Negotiation, a Winning Alternative to Lawsuits, will be published by the

Hunter Pyle and Chad Saunders, of Sundeen, Salinas and Pyle, will discuss the following topics of California wage and hour law:
- Who is covered as an "employee" and who is exempt under California law
- What entities qualify as "employers"
- Substantive requirements of wage and hour law, including: overtime,
meal periods, rest periods, reimbursement of business expenses, piece
rate and commission employees, waiting time penalties, and wage
statements
- Recent amendments to California's Private Attorneys General Act (PAGA)
- Class Actions and Collective Actions
About the Speakers:
Hunter Pyle graduated from Boalt Hall School of Law
(U.C. Berkeley) in 1997. He has represented clients in wrongful
termination/discrimination cases against such entities as Chevron,
Georgia-Pacific, and the California Department of Transportation
(Caltrans). Mr. Pyle has served as the Chair of the Alameda County Bar
Association Labor and Employment Committee. In addition to practicing
law full time, he is a Lecturer at Berkeley Law School where he teaches
the Employment Law course to 2nd and 3rd year law students.
Chad Saunders graduated from New College of California
School of Law in 2008. Mr. Saunders has extensive experience handling
plaintiff-side employment class actions and individual cases, including
wage and hour disputes and discrimination claims. His practice focuses
on workers who have been denied rightful compensation because of their
employers? unlawful policies, and those who have not received reasonable
accommodations for mental and physical disabilities.

Institute of the Bay Area (IIBA) will discuss the following:
-Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and Deferred
Action for Parental Accountability (DAPA) after the Supreme Court's U.S. v. Texas
opinion;
-Other immigration options, including family petitions,
asylum, Temporary Protected Status (TPS), VAWA and U Visas and T Visas

About the speaker:
Sara MacPherson is a staff attorney at the International
Institute of the Bay Area (IIBA), with a practice focusing on immigration
waivers. She has worked for the International Institute of Boston, and the
Political Asylum/Immigration Representation (PAIR) Project. Recently, she was
the director of the Emmy-nominated documentary film Stable Life, which explores
the stories of immigrants working in the horse racing industry.
The International Institute of the Bay Area is a 98 year-old
non-profit with offices in Oakland, Fremont, Antioch, San Francisco, Redwood
City and Napa. IIBA provides high-quality, free and low-cost immigration legal

show you access to pre-made pleading paper templates constructed for use
in Alameda County courts. After a demonstration by the instructor,
there will be time to work on your own. Help will be available.

The Oakland Art Association is a non-profit group of approximately 60 members. Several of its artists have been active during most of its 60 years.
The oil painting shown to the left is Matthew's Favorite Hat by Iris Sabre. Some exhibitors paint in watercolors and oil while others draw in chalk or take photographs. The judge will select three top entries to receive cash prizes. Several additional honorable mentions will be awarded.
