Supervisor's Message

d2 letterhead

On Tuesday, April 14 Supervisor Haggerty and I presented to the Fremont City Council. The Council invited us to talk about the Niles Canyon Trail Feasibility Study. This feasibility study is centered on trail connectivity in South and East Alameda County and providing a safe, environmentally sensitive multi-modal connection between Niles and Sunol. The Bay Area News Group reported on the presentation, and can be viewed here.

During the presentation Jim Townsend, the East Bay Regional Park District Trails Development Manager, described to the Council that this is a challenging project, but anything worth doing will be challenging. Our office, with Supervisor Scott Haggerty’s office, has been working with the Park District, Alameda County Public Works, Alameda County Water District, and the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission and have held two community meetings to receive feedback. A third public meeting will be held in late spring to receive another round of public input prior to finalizing the study. After the conclusion of the study, our offices will work with the partners to seek additional funding to continue community engagement and begin environmental and engineering studies.

Please keep a look out for the third public meeting announcement. Also, be aware we are working to have a day-long closure of Highway 84 through Niles Canyon for a walk and bike day, later this year, to allow the public access and view some of the opportunities and challenges a trail presents. For more information about this project and ways to stay informed, please contact our office at (510) 272-6692 or District2@acgov.org.

Thank you,

Supervisor Richard Valle

District 2 Spotlight

Earth Day 2015

This month's spotlight we highlight the volunteers of DISTRICT 2!

This past weekend our office, with the City of Union City, Masonic Homes of California, and Dig Deep Farms, hosted a Day of Service to celebrate Earth Day. On Saturday, over seventy volunteers gathered near Dry Creek Park and cleaned the area and planted native California trees. This area will be the future site of picnic tables and the South County hub for Dig Deep Farms, a program of the Alameda County Deputy Sheriffs Activities League.

It was a warm day, and we appreciated all those who attended to give back to the community. Thank you to Frank Imhoff, who prepared the area prior to the event. A special thank you to Alameda County Firefighters, Local 55 as they served lunch for each of the volunteers. Also, Nelson Kirk from the City of Union City who's tremendous effort made this event a success!

This is the 45th anniversary of Earth Day which was nationally recognized on Wednesday, April 22. Earth Day was created to be a “call to action” for every citizen, family, and public official to make a conscious effort to work towards a cleaner and healthier future. I am proud of District 2, for this year’s first event, as we take the steps for a more sustainable and greener environment.

We sincerely appreciated all those that attended and gave their Saturday to help the community. For those interested in participating in the future, please visit our website as we will announce the next event early next year.
