Vice Chair Nikki Check participated in a Congressional Staff briefing on Federal Permit Reform and the SPEED Act alongside with County Commissioners from Utah and Montana at the end of April.
In 2025, the SPEED Act was introduced in the House Natural Resources Committee in an attempt to modernize the National Environmental Policy Act by setting clearer timelines, reducing duplicative reviews, and limiting prolonged legal challenges. The Act is a bipartisan bill that, in addition to other important provisions, would formally designate counties as “cooperating agencies,” ensuring they have a defined role and early input in environmental reviews helping streamline decision-making while still maintaining environmental protections.
Supervisors from across the country have expressed support for the SPEED Act as well as other permitting reforms, including Yavapai County Supervisor Nikki Check who has been advocating alongside NACo for federal changes to permitting laws. Supervisor Check recently participated on a panel discussing this issue in Washington D.C., the goal of the panel being to promote cooperation between the federal government and county governments to make the most informed permitting and planning decisions possible for a project. Supervisor Check provided insights from her experiences with the transmission line in the Coconino National Forest, which has become a well-discussed topic amongst her constituents, noting: “The county wasn’t at the table, but my constituents were asking me to interject and to try to navigate some of these conversations,” she said. “Had I been there from the beginning of that process, it would have been much easier to identify community concerns, challenges and opportunities as far as the best end results there.”

State Route 179 Pavement Preservation - Red Rock Ranger Station to Chapel Road
Overview
The Arizona Department of Transportation has initiated a pavement preservation project along State Route 179 between the Red Rock Ranger Station just south of the Village of Oak Creek and Chapel Road (mileposts 304-311). The project is expected to be under construction in summer 2026 and anticipated for completion by fall 2026.
Project Elements
- Remove and replace the top layer of pavement
- Replace pavement markings and other miscellaneous work
What to Expect
SR 179 will be reduced to one lane only in the project area with alternating north- and southbound travel. Flaggers and a pilot car will move drivers through the work zone. There will be a 12-foot width restriction.
All work is scheduled to take place overnight from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. Sunday evenings through Friday mornings. Restrictions will be lifted each morning after the overnight work is completed.
ADOT advises drivers to plan for delays while the work is underway.

Budget Planning: The Board of Supervisors has been actively reviewing management and budget team recommendations, holding extensive study sessions to manage taxpayer funds.
Noise Ordinances: The county recently approved an ordinance strictly prohibiting the use of "Jake Brakes" (engine and compression brakes) in specific unincorporated residential communities to reduce traffic noise.
Fire Restrictions: A Stage 1 Fire Ban remains in effect across county-managed lands due to dry conditions and fire danger.
Emergency Management: The County is preparing for Monsoon Season.
Rubberized Chip Seal Cornville Road - Please be advised that VSS International, Inc., in conjunction with Yavapai County will be performing rubberized chip seal and fog seal operations on Cornville Road from Cornville to Kimberley’s Way. Construction will begin June 1, 2026, continuing through June 30, 2026. Work will be completed from 8:30 AM to 6:30 PM Monday through Thursday.
Save the Date: The 2nd Annual State of the County Event is scheduled for September 15, 2026, at the Findlay Toyota Center in Prescott Valley.
Zoning Updates: The Development Services department is actively overhauling the Planning and Zoning Ordinance and Subdivision Regulations to update land use policies while preserving the area's rural character.

 Corn Fest in Camp Verde

Corn Fest is a one-day free event featuring fresh roasted Hauser & Hauser corn, lots of other good eats with food trucks, beer, live musical entertainment, plus vendors with all types of products for sale. Come by Holloman Street and visit the Community Center in Camp Verde for all the fun. The Verde Valley Farmer’s Market starts at 8am at the ramada. Admission is free.
The Corn Fest started more than 25 years ago, celebrating the Verde Valley’s famous sweet corn. Hauser & Hauser grows the delicious corn in Camp Verde every year. Come out for this fun summer celebration that everyone in the family will enjoy.
