FIFTH/SIXTH STREET PROJECT UPDATE AND UPCOMING STRIPING WORK
Beginning Monday, November 9, 2026, crews will begin striping Fifth Street from Country Club Road to Alvernon Way. Work will take place from approximately 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. on Monday and Tuesday.
Two-way traffic will be maintained. Side streets will be temporarily closed as work progresses through the roadway. Officers will be on-site to assist with traffic control, and crews will be removing cones and signage as they move down the roadway.
Once the striping work is complete, the roadway will be in its new lane configuration, with one lane of travel in each direction, a center turn lane, and buffered bike lanes on each side. Due to the narrowness of the roadway, there will be no buffers for the bike lanes west of Jones Boulevard. The previous road striping consisted of two lanes of travel in each direction with no center turn lane or bike lanes. The new lane configuration on Fifth Street was included in the project to enhance safety, improve traffic operations and provide better walking and biking.

In the coming weeks, the streetlights will be powered and the HAWK crossings will be operational between Country Club Road and Alvernon Way. Concrete work is ongoing between Alvernon Way and Swan Road. Milling operations on the southside of the roadway from Swan Road to Craycroft Road are complete and the bottom lift of paving is scheduled for the second week of December.
