On October 15, 2026, at approximately 9:45 p.m., officers from Operations Division East responded to East Grant Road and North Ridgeway Road for a collision involving a stand-up electric scooter (e-scooter). Tucson Fire Department personnel also responded and evaluated those involved. The e-scooter rider, identified as 30-year-old Angelica Olga Hilario, was transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital, where she was pronounced deceased upon arrival. Her family was notified. TPD Traffic detectives responded to the scene and continued the investigation.
Witness interviews and roadway evidence indicate that Ms. Hilario was riding her e-scooter westbound on Grant Road when she was struck by a red 2023 Kia Sportage. The Kia was exiting a private drive on the north side of Grant Road and attempting to turn right onto westbound Grant Road when the driver failed to yield. Evidence indicates that the e-scooter’s lights were not activated as required for bicycles operating at night.
An officer at the scene determined that the 69-year-old male driver of the Kia was not impaired. The listed contributing factors at this time are the Kia driver’s failure to yield when exiting a private drive and the e-scooter rider’s failure to use the required lighting. The investigation remains ongoing, and no arrests or citations have been issued.
Under Arizona Revised Statutes § 28-819, electric scooters are subject to the same rights and responsibilities as bicycles, rather than pedestrians. Therefore, this collision is documented and categorized as a vehicle-versus-bicycle collision.
