EARLY VOTING STARTS TODAY - Today, Oct. 7, is the start of early voting in the Tuesday, Nov. 3, general and special election. The City of Tucson’s "The Choice Is Yours" publicity pamphlet recently was mailed to City of Tucson households with a registered voter, as were other pamphlets from different jurisdictions. The 2026 City of Tucson election is being consolidated with the general election administered by Pima County. The publicity pamphlet provides voters with election information, including where and how to vote, sample ballots, the full text of the ballot propositions, arguments for and against the propositions, and contact information for questions or additional information. The City of Tucson has two propositions appearing on the ballot. Proposition 421 is a franchise agreement for Tucson Electric Power, and Proposition 422 is the reauthorization of a one-tenth-cent transaction privilege (sales) tax and use tax, with revenues dedicated to Reid Park Zoo. CITY ADVANCES WORK ON THE PROSPERITY INITATIVE - Tucson's Mayor and Council yesterday, Oct. 6, adopted an Action Plan for the Prosperity Initiative, a regional, cross-sector strategy designed to reduce poverty, expand economic mobility, and strengthen opportunity across Pima County. The Initiative is a collaborative effort involving the City of Tucson, Pima County, and the Community Coalition for Prosperity, representing many cross-sector partners. While the Prosperity Initiative is regional in scope, the adopted Action Plan establishes a three- to five-year framework that focuses specifically on the City of Tucson’s municipal responsibilities. It outlines how the City will translate the adopted policies into actionable steps that can be carried out within City authority, operations, and budget, while continuing to align with all of its partners. ICYMI: SANTA RITA PARK REOPENS (VIDEO) - The City of Tucson last week celebrated the grand reopening of Santa Rita Park, 401 E. 22nd St. The celebration featured Tucson Mayor Regina Romero, Ward 5 Council Member Selina Barajas, food trucks, entertainment, and activities for the kids. The estimated $8 million, multiyear renovation was shaped by five public meetings and three surveys that drew nearly 800 responses. The project added a shaded splash pad and playground, walking paths, an event plaza, more than 300 trees and shrubs, a new restroom, two multipurpose fields, a relocated baseball field, a parking lot, and improved ADA-accessible walkways. Funding came from Tucson Delivers Proposition 407, City Framework funds, impact fees, and a Tohono O'odham Nation Gaming Grant. The project also includes public art by Oliverio Balcells, who created a mosaic mural and two metal benches reflecting the neighborhood's history, a border of ceramic tiles made by Borton Elementary School students, and an oral history project completed with Los Descendientes de Tucson, in partnership with the Arts Foundation for Tucson and Southern Arizona.
