TRAFFIC ALERT
AVIATION PARKWAY - FULL CLOSURE
Beginning at 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2, through 6 a.m. Monday, Oct. 5, 2026, Aviation Parkway will be closed in both directions between Broadway Boulevard and Golf Links Road. Crews will be removing a section of the bridge deck overhang as part of the 22nd Street Bridge Revitalization Project.
The temporary closure is necessary to allow crews to safely remove the overhang directly above Aviation Parkway, protecting both workers and the traveling public. Message boards are out to notify drivers and detour routes are included in the attached map. The schedule is subject to change due to inclement weather or other unforeseen circumstances.
Project Update:
Crews have completed site clearing in preparation for bridge construction. Construction is underway on the west side of the existing bridge, where three spans have been removed. Crews have also begun constructing the new bridge, including initial concrete placements for the bridge abutments and the first stage of the bridge piers. Additional work includes drainage installation, rebar installation, and forming and pouring retaining walls.
Project Background:
The 22nd Street Bridge Revitalization Project began in February 2026, with the closure of the bridge beginning on March 3, 2026. This project will replace the existing weight restricted bridge and increase the number of travel lanes to three in each direction between Kino Parkway and Tucson Boulevard to allow for more travel capacity.
In August 2022, the City of Tucson was awarded $25 million in federal grant funding to support this project through the Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) program, investing in communities to modernize roads and critical infrastructure.
This project was also part of the Regional Transportation Authority plan approved by voters in 2006. The Regional Transportation Authority has invested more than $1.4 billion in transportation projects and services to improve mobility, safety, economic vitality and quality of life.
