At approximately 2:15 a.m. on September 9, 2026, patrol officers from Operations Division East responded to a 9-1-1 call at a residence in the 7400 block of East Vuelta Rancho Mesquite. Around the same time, TPD received a medical alert notification from a residence across the street from the initial call.
Upon arrival, officers located an adult male suspect armed with a knife and a 94-year-old female. Both had sustained injuries consistent with sharp-force trauma. Officers deployed a Taser and took the suspect into custody. He was identified as 29-year-old Samuel Thomas Stangl V. Officers provided first aid to both individuals until Tucson Fire Department personnel arrived and transported them to an area hospital. The 94-year-old victim was initially in life-threatening condition but has since stabilized and is expected to survive. Officers located another victim, 58-year-old Samuel Stangl IV deceased underneath a vehicle in the driveway. The vehicle appeared to have collided with multiple objects in front of the residence, including Mr. Stangl IV.
Additional responding officers contacted the residence where the medical alert notification originated. There, officers located a 75-year-old female victim and a 77-year-old male victim who had sustained minor injuries. The victims reported that their neighbor, Samuel Stangl V, forced his way into their home and assaulted them before leaving the residence. The victims were able to call police following the incident.
Detectives from the Homicide Unit responded to the scene and continued the investigation. Detectives processed both residences for evidence and conducted several interviews. Detectives learned that Stangl V lived with both the 58-year-old and 94-year-old victims. The circumstances surrounding the motive remain unknown. Stangl V remains hospitalized while receiving treatment for his injuries. Once released from the hospital, he will be booked on charges of 1st Degree Murder/Domestic Violence, two counts of Kidnapping/Domestic Violence, Attempted 1st Degree Murder/Domestic Violence, 2nd Degree Burglary, and two counts of Aggravated Assault. The investigation remains ongoing. Additional information will be released as it becomes available.
