On September 8, 2026, at approximately 7:30 a.m., officers from Operations Division Midtown and members from the Tucson Fire Department responded to East Grant Road and North Arcadia Avenue regarding reports of a collision involving a bicyclist and a vehicle. The bicyclist was pronounced deceased at the scene. He has been identified as 76-year-old Steven Lee McClain. His next of kin has been notified of his passing. The driver of the vehicle involved, a Volkswagen SUV, did not sustain any injuries. Detectives from the Traffic Investigations Unit, along with the Crime Scene Unit, responded to continue the investigation.
Witness interviews, in conjunction with roadway and video evidence, indicated that Mr. McClain attempted to cross East Grant Road at Arcadia Avenue southbound in a marked crosswalk equipped with a HAWK (High-Intensity Activated Crosswalk). Mr. McClain activated the HAWK and entered the intersection to cross before the light cycled to solid red and was struck by the Volkswagen that was traveling westbound within a group of vehicles. The Volkswagen’s speed was approximately 40 miles per hour, which is the posted speed limit on East Grant Road at North Arcadia Avenue.
An officer from the Impaired Driving Enforcement Unit responded and evaluated the driver for impairment. It was determined that the driver was not impaired by alcohol and or drugs at the time of the collision. Any alcohol and or drugs within Mr. McClain’s system at the time of the collision may be determined through medical records.
Mr. McClain entering the roadway before the HAWK light signal changed to solid red and against the flow of traffic were determined to be the major contributing factors of the collision.
No criminal charges or civil citations have been issued. This investigation is ongoing. Any additional information may be released at a later date as it becomes available.
