FIFTH STREET TRAFFIC ALERT
FULL CLOSURE AT ALVERNON WAY
Beginning at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 21, 2026, the intersection of Alvernon Way and Fifth Street will fully close to allow crews to completely reconstruct the intersection as part of the Fifth/Sixth Street Improvement Project. The closure is scheduled to remain in place through 7 a.m. Monday, Aug. 24, 2026.
The full closure will allow crews to complete the work in one weekend and minimize the overall duration of construction in this section. During the closure, Columbus Boulevard will remain open.
Construction activities will include removing asphalt and base layers; completing underground conduit runs; rewiring traffic signals; grading the new road base; placing bottom and top lifts of asphalt; and making necessary utility adjustments.
Message boards have been deployed to notify the traveling public of the upcoming closure, and police officers will be on site to assist motorists. Access to businesses at all corners of the intersection will be maintained throughout the closure.
During the closure, SunTran bus stops will not be serviced along the following roadways:
- Alvernon Way: All stops between Speedway Boulevard and Broadway Boulevard.
- Fifth Street: All stops between Country Club Road and Swan Road.
Transit riders are encouraged to plan ahead and allow additional time for their trips during the closure.
The construction schedule is subject to change due to weather or unforeseen circumstances.
