On April 6, 2026, at around 7:30p.m., the Public Safety Communications Department received a 911 call regarding a robbery in the 2500 block of North Campbell Avenue. During this robbery, the suspects stole a vehicle. Information from the caller suggested the vehicle may have been near the 100 block of West Ajo Way. Officers from Operations Division South located the vehicle and attempted to stop it. The occupants of the vehicle fled on foot into a nearby home. Officers evacuated a resident from the home. One suspect surrendered while the other remained inside and did not comply with commands to come out. Members of the Hostage Negotiation Unit arrived on scene and initiated communication with the suspect. After several hours the suspect came out of the home and presented a perceived threat to officers. Officers discharged their department-issued firearms, striking the suspect. Officers immediately rendered aid and he was transported to a local hospital with life threatening injuries.
The Pima Regional Critical Incident Team, or PRCIT, has been activated to handle the criminal investigation of this incident. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department is the lead investigating agency for this officer-involved shooting. The Tucson Police Department will be conducting a separate, but parallel investigation to determine if any policy violations occurred. As is standard practice in all officer-involved shootings, all findings will be forwarded to the Pima County Attorney’s Office for review once the investigation is complete.
