The City of Tucson, Pima County Health Department and the American Red Cross invite media to attend a community heat awareness canvassing event this Friday morning focused on sharing lifesaving heat safety information with residents ahead of the summer heat season.
Volunteers and community partners will gather at the Donna Liggins Recreation Center to conduct door-to-door outreach in nearby neighborhoods, provide information about heat safety, check on residents and connect households with resources that help people stay safe during extreme heat.
This effort is part of a broader regional campaign taking place across several Pima County neighborhoods from March 17 through April 25 to strengthen neighborhood connections and ensure residents know how to recognize and respond to heat-related illness.
Mayor Regina Romero will join volunteers for the canvassing event, highlighting the importance of community partnerships in protecting vulnerable residents during extreme heat. She will be available for media from 8:15 a.m. until the event starts at 8:30 a.m.
The event will kick off at Donna Liggins Recreation Center, which the City of Tucson is developing as its first Resilience Hub in partnership with Tucson Electric Power and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. The project explores how community centers can support residents during emergencies such as extreme heat and potential power outages by providing access to cooling, information, community resources, and non-interrupted power through an Energy Battery Storage System year-round.
By bringing together volunteers, local organizations and residents, the canvassing effort reinforces a simple message: checking on neighbors can save lives.
