Saving ODS History
An important element of our original substation was on the minds of ODS officers, “Will it be possible to salvage the San Xavier mural from our building?” Officers relentlessly pushed this issue, as the San Xavier mural sat right in the middle of our original building in the main gathering place for all personnel. It seemed impossible to cut the 15 by 8 foot mural out from the wall. But the ODS First Sergeant, Louie Bustamante, worked with Core Construction, explaining the significance of the mural and how much it meant to ODS officers. Together they developed a plan, but nothing was guaranteed.
Then, on January 29th, the impossible became possible! The entire wall was reinforced, cut out, and carefully transported through the old building, down the street, and safely into its new home!
Patrol Operations
On February 2, 2026, two ODS officers were operating as a two-person unit when they approached a group of individuals at the corner of Ajo Way and Clark Avenue. Upon contacting the group, an adult male subject stood up and ran from officers, mounting his bicycle and riding away while committing various civil traffic violations. One of the officers engaged in a foot chase with the subject and maintained a visual on him, while the other officer retrieved the patrol vehicle. Both officers continued to chase the fleeing bicycle via patrol vehicle. The subject then entered a shopping plaza, where he lost control of his bike and attempted to continue his flight on foot, but officers caught up with him and successfully detained him in handcuffs.
During the process of detaining him, a blue M30 pill fell out of his pocket. He was placed under arrest, and search incident to arrest found several more blue M30 pills and drug paraphernalia in his possession. A records check also indicated that he had a felony warrant for probation violation for robbery. The warrant was confirmed and he was transported to the Pima County Jail, where he was booked for the robbery warrant, narcotics possession, and paraphernalia possession.
On February 5, 2026, officers were conducting surveillance on a vehicle at Mission Manor Park. Officers conducted a traffic stop near 12th Avenue and Drexel Road after they observed the vehicle commit a traffic violation. All occupants were asked to exit the vehicle. Officers observed three M30 pills (counterfeit oxycodone laced with fentanyl) in the passenger seat, and an additional M30 pill under the driver's seat.
Officers searched the passenger and located a baggie containing a crystal-like substance. The substance tested positive for cocaine and weighed 1.071 grams.
Officers searched the driver and located on his key chain a small red vial containing two separate baggies. One contained a crystal-like substance and the other contained a powdery substance. Both baggies were tested. The first baggie tested positive for meth and weighed .768 (w/ packaging). The second baggie tested positive for cocaine and weighed 1.194 grams (w/ packaging).
Subsequent search of the vehicle revealed a small vial containing 25 M30s, hidden in the back seat within the span of control of the driver. All three occupants were transported and booked into the Pima County Jail.
On February 9, 2026, officers were aware of two Stop and Arrest fliers distributed for two 14-year-old males for discharging a firearm within city limits, prohibited possessor of a firearm, and minor in possession of a firearm.
On February 11, 2026, two ODS officers were working as a two-person unit when they drove by the 500 block of West Bilby Road. They observed two male subjects matching the descriptions on the fliers walking into a residence. Additional officers responded with a K9 unit. Containment was set on the residence, and a contact plan was established. The mother of one of the suspects exited, followed by her son, and both were detained. The second suspect attempted to flee through the alleyway but retreated back into the residence when he observed officers; he eventually exited the residence and was detained.
Detectives responded and obtained a search warrant for the residence; a black loaded Glock pistol with a switch (full auto capability) was located in the shed in the backyard. Several spent pistol and rifle casings were located in the front yard and collected. Both juveniles were ultimately placed under arrest. Probable cause was established to arrest the adult mother of juvenile suspect #1; this juvenile was known to already have been detained at the Pima County Juvenile Detention Center (PCJDC) for murder. Both suspects were transported to PCJDC, where they were detained on discharging a firearm within city limits, prohibited possessor, and minor in possession of a firearm charges. The same charges were also added for the mother, who was transported and booked into the Pima County Jail on domestic violence child abuse charges.
On February 12, 2026, officers conducted a traffic stop on a blue Saturn Vue near South 6th Avenue and West Lincoln Street. They made contact with the adult female driver, who verbally identified herself. She then fled the traffic stop at a high rate of speed and was not relocated. Through law enforcement data, she was positively identified and had an outstanding felony warrant stemming from two counts of auto theft and narcotics charges.
On February 19, 2026, the vehicle was located at a convenience store in the 500 block of West Ajo Way, parked at the gas pumps. A traffic stop was initiated on the vehicle with the suspect driver. The vehicle fled again at a high rate of speed and was later located abandoned. K9 officers responded and conducted a scout for the adult female suspect driver, but she was not located.
On February 20, 2026, officers were in the area of South 16th Avenue and West Ajo Way when they positively identified the suspect attempting to flee from a nearby apartment complex. She was contacted and detained. After being advised of her Miranda rights, she admitted to fleeing from the initial traffic stop, but refused to answer any further questions. Her felony warrant was confirmed and she was transported to the Pima County Jail, where she was booked on her warrant and two counts of unlawful flight from law enforcement.
