22ND STREET BRIDGE REVITALIZATION PROJECT GROUNDBREAKING NEXT WEEK - Tucson Mayor Regina Romero, Ward 5 Council Member Selina Barajas, the Regional Transportation Authority (RTA), and the Tucson Department of Transportation and Mobility (DTM) invite you to a groundbreaking ceremony to commemorate the start of the upcoming revitalization project of the 22nd Street Bridge, between Tucson Boulevard and Kino Parkway. The event will be held Wednesday, Feb. 4, from noon-1:30 p.m., at 1055 S. Campbell Ave. The improvement project is scheduled to begin at the end of February, with the full closure of the bridge to begin March 3. In August 2022, The City of Tucson was awarded $25 million in federal grant funding through the Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) program, which invests in communities to modernize roads and critical infrastructure. DTM will use the funds to help build the new 22nd Street Bridge. The existing bridge has a weight restriction of 15 tons, due to structural deficiencies, and requires heavy vehicles to use alternate routes. Read the news release
TUCSON'S SAFE SLEEPING SITE RECENTLY MARKED A MILESTONE - The first sanctioned sleeping site for those experiencing homelessness in Tucson recently marked its 100th day of serving women experiencing homelessness. The pilot program, known as STAR Village, has served 72 women, offering a safe place and supportive services aimed at helping residents move into stable housing. Since opening, nine participants have transitioned into housing or shelter, and six of them are preparing to move into permanent housing. About 40% of residents have remained at the site since its opening and are still awaiting placement. STAR Village, funded by the City of Tucson and operated by the Primavera Foundation, provides stability, structure, and access to critical resources, including support for recovery and housing.
