ODS Starts the Big Move
We’ve officially moved into our new police substation! There’s still a ton of construction going on and the entire Southside Public Safety Center won’t be open to the public until later this summer. Rest assured that our officers have been hard at work responding to the needs of the community while also standing up operations from the new Santa Cruz Substation! Here are a couple of photos from day one of moving in on January 12, 2026.
  ODS Operations
Firearm and Drug Arrests
On January 7, 2026, ODS officers conducted proactive policing in the area of 12th Avenue and Ajo Way when they made contact with an adult male subject. He was detained for trespassing, and a firearm was located inside his waistband. Two glass pipes with burnt residue were located in his front sweater pocket, and a crystal-like substance was in the small coin pocket of his jeans. A records check of the firearm returned as stolen out of Washington state. The crystal-like substance located in his jeans weighed 2.215 grams with packaging and tested positive for methamphetamine. He was placed under arrest and booked into the Pima County Jail.
On January 21, 2026, ODS officers were conducting proactive policing in the area of South 12th Avenue and West Drexel Road. They located a vehicle blocking an alleyway. As officers passed behind the vehicle, the adult male driver immediately exited, while the adult female passenger in the front seat remained inside the vehicle. Officers asked her if there were any firearms in the vehicle. She confirmed that there were. She was then asked to exit the vehicle and drug paraphernalia was observed in plain view.
Both occupants were detained and a probable cause search of the vehicle was conducted. A black Taurus 9mm handgun was collected. Another handgun was located underneath the front passenger seat. Detectives from the Gun Crimes Intelligence Unit were contacted and responded. A records check confirmed the male subject to be a prohibited possessor. There were no indications he had had his rights restored to possess a firearm. The female claimed ownership of the Taurus 9mm but disclosed that her male companion was in possession of it. A search warrant was obtained and served for the male's buccal DNA. He was placed under arrest and transported to the Pima County Jail, where he was booked on prohibited possessor charges.
Shoplifting and Drug Arrest
On January 22, 2026, an adult homeless male generated multiple 911 calls throughout the day for trespassing and shoplifting at a convenience store in the 1000 block of East Ajo Way. ODS officers located him after he shoplifted again. He was placed under arrest and searched. He had an extensive amount of foil pieces with burnt residue, straws, glass pipes, and lighters. A baggie fell out of his sock that contained a crystal-like substance. It tested positive for methamphetamine and weighed .950 grams.
The suspect was booked on two felonies: dangerous drug possession and drug paraphernalia possession. He was also booked for two misdemeanors: shoplifting and trespassing. An area restriction was requested.
Reckless Driving Arrest
On January 26, 2026, ODS officers observed an ATV performing wheelies on Calle Santa Cruz near Irvington. The ATV accelerated away from officers at a high rate of speed. The Air Unit was in the area and was able to locate it and call out its direction of travel. The ATV attempted to weave through traffic to get back to Irvington but, due to the heavy traffic in Spectrum at the time, the ATV got blocked in behind a pickup truck. An officer quickly approached the ATV and took physical control of the driver. The driver revved his engine in a further attempt to flee, but stalled out and was able to be pulled off the ATV.
The driver, an adult male, was placed under arrest for Unlawful Flight, Reckless Driving, and Trespassing, along with a slew of other civil traffic offenses. His ATV was impounded and he was booked into the Pima County Jail.
