Tucson Water Suspends Water Shutoffs During Federal Government Shutdown
Mayor Regina Romero and Tucson Water have announced that Tucson Water will not conduct any residential water shutoffs due to nonpayment during the ongoing federal government shutdown. The temporary moratorium ensures that no household will lose access to essential water service while federal employees and other community members face delays in pay or economic hardship tied to the shutdown.
“Working families and seniors should not have to decide between paying for utilities or putting food on the table,” said Mayor Romero. “This suspension of the shutoffs is the City of Tucson’s way of taking immediate action to protect families. I am thankful to the Tucson Water team for acting with urgency and care to help people during these difficult times.”
Tucson Water Director John Kmiec emphasized that the department will continue to support customers through flexible payment plans, bill assistance programs, and water conservation tools. “Our priority is to maintain uninterrupted service and ensure that residents know help is available through our Tucson Water C.A.R.E.S. program. We encourage anyone experiencing financial hardship to contact our team.”
The City of Tucson | Tucson Water maintain that water security is foundational for community resilience. The temporary suspension of turnoffs will remain in effect until the conclusion of the federal government shutdown, after which Tucson Water will provide advance notice before reinstating normal billing and collection procedures.
