On October 20, 2025, Tucson Police Homicide Detectives identified 40-year-old Joshua Vincent Lee Poe as a suspect in the fatal shooting of 56-year-old Matthew Erik Simmerman that occurred on August 25, 2025.
Joshua Poe was already being held in the Pima County Jail after he was arrested for his involvement in the October 19th homicide that occurred in the 500 block of East Mable Street. Detectives reviewed forensic evidence from both murders and developed probable cause to obtain and execute a search warrant at Mr. Poe’s residence on October 21, 2025, where additional evidence was collected.
As part of the August 23rd homicide, the TPD released photographs to the public requesting help in identifying the suspects. Based on additional information and interviews, homicide detectives responded to the Pima County Jail and charged Mr. Poe with first degree murder and prohibited possessor in connection to the fatal shooting of Mr. Simmerman. Joshua Poe remains in custody and is currently being held on a $2,000,000 bond. The original media release from August 25, 2025, is listed below.

On August 23, 2025, around 11:45 p.m., officers from Operations Division Midtown responded to reports of a shooting in the 900 block of South Warren Avenue. Upon arrival, officers were directed east into a nearby wash, where they located the victim, 56-year-old Matthew Erik Simmerman, with gunshot trauma. Despite life-saving efforts by both police and Tucson Fire Department medics, Mr. Simmerman was pronounced deceased at the scene. Homicide detectives were briefed and took over the investigation.
Early findings indicate that Mr. Simmerman had been living in the wash with a female companion when a suspect approached him on foot and shot him. Detectives processed the area near the encampment for evidence. The investigation is ongoing, and detectives are asking anyone with information to come forward and contact 88-CRIME.
