Captain Lauren Pettey Operations Division West
October 2025
Loop Deployment
|
The Tucson Police Department conducted a focused deployment along the Rillito River and adjacent sections of the Huckleberry Loop to address ongoing quality-of-life issues and criminal activity, including: illegal camping in the wash; trespassing; open-air narcotics use, sales, and possession; outstanding warrants and stop and arrests (10-82s); and prohibited possession of firearms.
During the deployment, officers contacted several encampments, as well as individuals engaged in unlawful activity. Multiple subjects attempted to flee on foot but were subsequently detained and identified. The operation resulted in approximately 50 arrests and the recovery of two firearms, one of which was in the possession of a prohibited possessor. The deployment enhanced safety along the river path and reinforced the department’s commitment to addressing community concerns related to crime, public safety, and environmental degradation along Tucson’s waterways.
Due to the unique terrain and the anticipated number of people encountered, the following equipment was used: drones, ATVs, Can-Ams, 4x4 vehicles, motors, bikes, and transport units. A Command Post was also established, with a TPD Evidence unit and City of Tucson and Pima County Environmental Services on site.
Special thanks to all those involved in the operation. Without their assistance, it would not have been possible.

Crime Prevention Tip
TPD works every day to reduce gun violence – by vigorously pursuing enforcement against prohibited possessors, treating non-fatal shooting investigations – even with uncooperative victims – as high priorities, and working diligently to solve homicides. TPD also works to connect at-risk youth with job, educational, housing, addiction, and mental health services.
These approaches are proving effective, but what other factors might reduce gun violence?
In 2018, the Rand Corporation established The National Collaborative on Gun Violence Research with funding from Arnold Ventures. Over 5 years, NCGVR funded 57 research projects on reducing gun violence. You can read about what they've learned here: https://www.rand.org/pubs/commentary/2024/08/the-national-collaborative-on-gun-violence-research.html
