CITY OF TUCSON TO BREAK GROUND ON IMPROVEMENTS AT FRANCISCO ELIAS ESQUER PARK
Tucson Mayor Regina Romero, Ward 3 Council Member Kevin Dahl, Housing and Community Development, and Tucson Parks and Recreation will break ground on a project to enhance Francisco Elias Esquer Park, located at 1415 N. 14th Ave., on Wednesday, Oct. 29, at 10 a.m.
“Everyone deserves to be safe: in our neighborhoods, at our parks, and in our public spaces,” said Tucson Mayor Regina Romero. “At Esquer Park, we are investing in security lighting, a new walking path, a new pedestrian bridge, and two new dog parks for people to enjoy the outdoors with their pets. This park is such an important asset to the residents of Barrio Blue Moon and the Tucson House, and it is important to me that residents feel safe while using their park. It is what they deserve. Thank you to Tucson Voters who approved Prop 407, helping to make investments like these possible,” said the mayor.
The project will construct separate small and large dog park areas on the north side of the park. A new pedestrian bridge will be built over the wash to connect the south side of the park to these new amenities. The bridge will link to a new walking path that will circle the dog parks and feature new area lighting. The design also includes landscaping and green stormwater infrastructure (GSI) elements throughout the project area.
This project is one of nine Action Activities identified by the community during the Thrive in the 05 Transformation Plan engagement process. Action Activities have leveraged local and federal funding to implement investment projects that addressed key priorities of the Thrive in the 05 community, such as storytelling, public art, commercial corridor investments, and increased access to green space.
“It is truly exciting to celebrate the start of renovations and additions to this city park, based on a plan approved by Tucson voters,” said Ward 3 Council Member Dahl. “Once completed, these improvements will provide neighbors and other residents more opportunities for recreation and enjoyment of open space.”
The south portion of the park will remain open to the public during construction. Temporary fencing will be installed around the active construction zone to ensure public safety.
Kimley Horn is the project design team. A contractor for the project is to be determined. Funding for this project is provided by $579,376.75 in Tucson Delivers voter-approved Prop 407 funds, $656,931.06 in Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds, and $250,000 City Framework funds.
