FATAL MOTORCYCLE COLLISION SOUTH PARK AVENUE AND EAST FAIR STREET |
|
|
On September 17 at 9:17pm, Tucson Police Department Officers from Operations Division South responded to the intersection of South Park Avenue and East Fair Street regarding reports of a vehicular collision involving a passenger vehicle and a motorcycle. Tucson Fire Department personnel responded and evaluated all parties involved. The motorcycle rider, 24-year-old Gunnar Robert Dale, was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. The sole occupant of the other vehicle, a 65-year-old female, had minor injuries and was treated at the scene. Detectives from the Tucson Police Department Traffic Collision Investigation Unit responded for further investigation.
Witness statements in conjunction with roadway and video evidence indicated that the driver of the car was northbound on Park Avenue and attempted to make a left turn from the left turn lane onto westbound Fair Street. Mr. Dale was traveling southbound on Park Avenue in the median lane and had accelerated toward the intersection when the traffic signal for northbound and southbound traffic transitioned from red to green. He was traveling faster than the posted 40 MPH speed limit when he collided with the car. The driver of the car remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation.
An Impaired Driving Enforcement Unit officer responded and evaluated the driver of the car for impairment. It was determined she was not impaired at the time of the collision. Any alcohol and/or drugs within Mr. Dale’s system at the time of the collision may be determined through medical records. Mr. Dale had a valid driver’s license with a motorcycle endorsement. Mr. Dale was wearing a helmet at the time of the collision. Mr. Dale’s next of kin have been notified of his passing.
The driver’s failure to yield while making a left turn and Mr. Dale’s speed were the major contributing factors of the collision. No civil citations or criminal charges have been issued at this time. This is an ongoing investigation.
