Celebrating 125 Years of Responsible Water Management
More than 5,000 miles of pipeline run silently beneath our feet – a testament to Tucson Water’s deep roots in our community.
On July 24th, 1900, the City of Tucson purchased the Tucson Water Company to serve the community’s growing demand for water in the Sonoran Desert. By then, the system had matured into a groundwater system – a far cry from the hastily constructed pipeline meant to transmit surface water from the Santa Cruz River that was constructed in 1882. The infrastructure purchased included a wellfield, a modest network of pipelines, fire hydrants, a standpipe, and pumphouse to support higher pressure throughout the system. In order to fund the purchase, the United States Congress authorized the City of Tucson to issue bonds to the tune of $110,000 needed to initiate the expansion of Tucson’s water system.
Now, we celebrate generations of Tucsonans who inherited the early water system and met each challenge with careful judgement in service to their community. The expertise held within our organization continues to shape every drop we deliver. Our infrastructure endures because of the skilled hands that build, maintain, and repair it – often without recognition, always with care. As Tucson grows, it is the values of our community that guide us, reminding us to live in balance with the desert we call home. Innovation, too, moves us forward – powered by those who bring fresh ideas and evolving technology to meet modern challenges. Each contribution, distinct yet interconnected, carries this system – and our shared water future – forward.
As we shape the next 125 years, we have carefully designed strategies based on the values of our community, forming the One Water 2100 Plan and turning it into action – year after year.
