On July 18, 2025, at approximately 11:00 p.m., officers from Operations Division South and members from the Tucson Fire Department responded to the area of West Valencia Road and South 12th Avenue regarding a report of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle. When officers and Tucson Fire Department personnel arrived, they located the pedestrian in the roadway with serious injuries. Tucson Fire Department medics transported the pedestrian to a hospital for further treatment. The pedestrian did not survive his injuries and was pronounced deceased. The pedestrian has been identified as 23-year-old Damian Guillermo Nunez. His family was located and notified of his passing. Traffic Detectives and Crime Scene Unit responded to continue the investigation.
Through witness interviews in conjunction with roadway and physical evidence, officers and detectives determined that the suspect vehicle was traveling eastbound on Valencia Road in the median lane. Mr. Nunez attempted to cross West Valencia Road, from north to south, when he was struck by the suspect vehicle in the eastbound lanes of traffic. Mr. Nunez was not in a marked or implied crosswalk. The suspect vehicle fled the scene after the collision.
On July 19, 2025, the Tucson Police Department received information that identified the driver and vehicle involved in this collision. The vehicle was located along with the driver, a 16-year-old juvenile, who was interviewed about their involvement.
Mr. Nunez attempting to jaywalk across West Valencia Road is the primary contributing factor in this collision. The act of leaving the scene of the collision remains under investigation and will be presented to the appropriate prosecuting agency. This investigation remains ongoing, and any additional information may be released at a later date as it becomes available.
